House-Hunting in Hanoi: Plan a Week of Apartment Viewings Around a Weekly Rental

About 4 minutes to read
A week of apartment viewings is a logistics problem before it is a housing problem. You need to be in a different part of the city every few hours, on time, with a way home each evening. A bike by the week fits that rhythm, but only if the week is planned around it: which viewings share a district, which day is for the commute test, and what the bike really costs for each flat you see. This guide gives a simple frame for all three.
What the bike costs per viewing
The reference price of a manual bike for a week is 700,000 to 800,000 VND, and of an automatic bike 600,000 to 1,000,000 VND. These are the shop’s reference prices, and the confirmed price for your bike may differ, so check it when you book. Divide the week by the number of viewings and the rental becomes a figure you can compare with other ways of getting around:
| Viewings in the week | Manual bike | Automatic bike |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | about 87,500 to 100,000 VND each | about 75,000 to 125,000 VND each |
| 12 | about 58,300 to 66,700 VND each | about 50,000 to 83,300 VND each |
| 16 | about 43,800 to 50,000 VND each | about 37,500 to 62,500 VND each |
This counts the rental only; fuel and parking are extra. The table also shows why packing viewings matters: doubling the viewings from 8 to 16 halves what each one costs in rental, and the bike costs the same whether you use it for two hours a day or ten.
A week built around the bike
The plan below is a suggestion, not a rule. It keeps the first day free and puts the hardest test, the commute, late in the week when you know the roads.
| Day | Use |
|---|---|
| 1 | Collect the bike, ride between your accommodation and the districts you will visit, and book no viewings |
| 2 to 5 | Three viewings a day, grouped by district, with at least 90 minutes between starts |
| 6 | Second visits to your top two flats, and a commute test at the hour you would really ride it |
| 7 | Decide, then return the bike or ask about keeping it |
Group viewings by area, not by listing order
Do not take viewings in the order they are offered. Put every address on one map and cluster them by district before you answer any message; the order in which listings arrived is not the order in which you should ride. Plan with travel time rather than distance, because a short distance in Hanoi can take a long time. Ask each agent for a map pin and a phone number and plan to arrive ten minutes early; When Google Maps Sends You to a Closed Road in Hanoi explains what to do when the route fails. Leave a buffer between viewings so that one that runs long does not push the next one into someone else’s slot.
Ask about parking at every viewing
A flat without a safe place for the bike is a different flat. At each viewing, ask where a motorbike would be parked, whether there is a fee, who has access and whether the space is covered. Write the answers next to the rent, because they change the monthly cost. If you need to leave a bike at a viewing during the visit, lock it, park it where you can see it and take the helmet and anything valuable with you.
Test the commute at the real hour
Riding to a flat at 11:00 says little about riding to work from it at 08:00. On day 6, make the journey you would make every working day, at the hour you would make it. If rush-hour riding is new to you, do the test as a passenger first, and never read or answer a message while riding. Choosing a Motorbike Departure Time in Hanoi: A Rush-Hour Worksheet helps you choose the hour to leave. For planning the days themselves, three days in Hanoi with a rental motorbike gives a way to build distinct routes without retracing them.
If you decide before the week is over
If you choose a flat on day 5, you may want to keep the bike beyond day 7. The reference price of a manual bike for a month is 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 VND, and of an automatic bike 1,200,000 to 2,000,000 VND, but whether a weekly rental can continue as a monthly one, and how days already paid would be treated, is for the shop to say. Ask before you decide, and write the answer down. If you keep the bike beyond the agreed end of the week, Thuê xe máy Nguyễn Hà charges 20,000 VND per hour for an extension, and more than 6 hours is charged as one rental day.
The shop’s monthly rental page describes the longer rental, and for longer stays the Weekly & Monthly Rentals category goes further than this one-week plan.
