Renting vs Buying a Motorbike in Hanoi for a Six-Month Stay: Registration, Resale and Total Cost
About 7 minutes to read
Whether to rent or buy a motorbike in Hanoi for six months depends on lines that sit on both sides of the sum: what is paid up front, what paperwork and fees add, and what comes back when the stay ends. This article sets the owner-confirmed reference ranges of Thuê xe máy Nguyễn Hà beside what official Vietnamese pages and Honda Vietnam’s product pages say about buying and registering a bike. No page read for it gives a second-hand or resale price, so the resale side is paperwork plus a break-even formula, not a number. All pages were read on 26 October 2026.
The rental line: six months at the reference ranges
The owner-confirmed reference range for a manual bike is 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 VND for a month, and for an automatic bike 1,200,000 to 2,000,000 VND for a month. Reference prices only. Confirm the bike and rate before booking.
| Bike type | Reference range, one month | Illustration: six times the low end | Illustration: six times the high end |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual | 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 VND | 6 × 1,000,000 = 6,000,000 VND | 6 × 1,200,000 = 7,200,000 VND |
| Automatic | 1,200,000 to 2,000,000 VND | 6 × 1,200,000 = 7,200,000 VND | 6 × 2,000,000 = 12,000,000 VND |
The last two columns are an illustration, not a quote from the shop. Monthly Motorbike Rental in Hanoi: Rates and Booking is this site’s page on monthly rates and booking.
The purchase line: new-bike prices on Honda Vietnam’s pages
Honda Vietnam’s Wave Alpha 110 page shows a recommended retail price (“Giá bán lẻ đề xuất”) of 18,841,091 VND beside the colour “Đen nhám” and lists the drive as mechanical with four speeds. Its Vision page shows 36,808,363 VND and calls the model a scooter. The pages name two versions (Wave Alpha 110) and four (Vision) but show one price each, give no date for it and do not say whether tax is included. These are new-bike figures for two example models, not second-hand prices or a list of any shop’s bikes.
Paperwork: where a foreign owner registers and what must be shown
The Ministry of Public Security’s portal summarised a circular in force from 1 January 2025 (page dated 5 December 2024). It puts motorbikes of foreign individuals with the traffic police department (Phòng Cảnh sát giao thông) and leaves commune police with domestic owners. The Lai Chau portal’s consolidated text, headed Circular 79/2024/TT-BCA and amended on 28 February and 30 June 2025, still gives commune police only domestic owners.
For a foreign owner who lives and works in Vietnam, that text asks for a permanent or temporary residence card with at least six months of residence remaining, and it writes the certificate’s term to match the card. The pages do not say whether a visitor without a card can register a bike. For dates and temporary residence in a long stay, see Long-Term Motorbike Rental in Vietnam: Visa Dates, Temporary Residence and an Alignment Checklist.
First registration needs five items: a declaration, owner papers, a vehicle origin certificate, a certificate of lawful ownership and proof of financial obligations. The Ministry of Public Security portal’s procedure sheet for commune police has the plate issued at once and the certificate within two working days of a valid file; Article 7 of the consolidated text gives the same terms for a new registration.
Fees and tax on top of the price
A Government newspaper page dated 7 July 2025, on Circular 71/2025/TT-BTC, treats Hanoi as the first of two fee regions. Circular 60/2023/TT-BTC says the fee follows where the owner lives and that a motorbike’s value for the fee is its registration-tax value.
| Item | Amount or rate |
|---|---|
| First registration and plate, Hanoi, bike value up to 15,000,000 VND | 1,000,000 VND |
| Same, value above 15,000,000 VND up to 40,000,000 VND | 2,000,000 VND |
| Same, value above 40,000,000 VND | 4,000,000 VND |
| Exchange group, where ownership transfers are filed: certificate with plate; certificate without plate; plate | 100,000; 50,000; 50,000 VND |
| Registration tax on a motorbike: first time; second time onward | 2%; 1% |
The tax rates come from Decree 175/2025/NĐ-CP, which the Ministry of Justice portal reports as in force from 1 July 2025 and as basing the taxable value on the price table of the provincial People’s Committee. The Public Security portal’s procedure sheet still names Circular 229/2016/TT-BTC for fees, so it and the later pages do not match; this article uses the later figures.
Resale: what selling again involves
The Public Security portal’s summary says that when ownership changes hands, the owner named on the registration certificate keeps the certificate and plate rather than giving them to the buyer, and files them with the registration office for revocation within 30 days of the transfer document. Until then that person still carries an owner’s responsibilities. Only after revocation does the buyer apply, with the declaration, owner papers, transfer document, registration-tax receipt and revocation certificate.
For a six-month stay, planning the sale and the 30-day filing before departure is general reasoning, not a statement from the pages. The pages give no resale price and no time a sale takes.
A break-even illustration with new-bike figures
For example, take Honda’s shown prices as stand-ins for the tax value (no page read gives the tax office’s table value), and add the 2% first-time tax and the plate fee for the 15,000,000 to 40,000,000 VND band. Every figure below is arithmetic, not a quote from the shop or a page.
| Step (VND) | Wave Alpha 110, against manual | Vision, against automatic |
|---|---|---|
| Shown price | 18,841,091 | 36,808,363 |
| Tax at 2% | 376,822 (18,841,091 × 0.02 = 376,821.82) | 736,167 (36,808,363 × 0.02 = 736,167.26) |
| Plate fee | 2,000,000 | 2,000,000 |
| Outlay before resale | 21,217,913 | 39,544,530 |
| Six months at the range ends | 6,000,000 to 7,200,000 | 7,200,000 to 12,000,000 |
| Resale that would equal the rental total (outlay minus rental) | 14,017,913 to 15,217,913 | 27,544,530 to 32,344,530 |
| Share of the shown price | 74.4% to 80.8% | 74.8% to 87.9% |
Read plainly, the resale price that would equal six months of rent runs from about 74 to about 88 percent of the shown price across these ranges, before costs the pages do not price. Pairing a four-speed bike with the manual range and a scooter with the automatic range is a simplification.
A worksheet for your own six months
This is general guidance, not a statement from the pages.
- Rent column: multiply the months by the reference range for the bike type, then ask the shop which bike and rate each end belongs to.
- Buy column: get a written price for a real bike, ask the tax office for its table value, and add the fee row and tax rate that fit a new or transferred bike. Buying a Second-Hand Motorbike in Hanoi as a Foreigner: Ownership Transfer, Registration Fee and Plates covers the second-hand route.
- Eligibility: check the residence card term before counting any purchase.
- Exit: get a resale quote and plan the 30-day revocation filing before departure.
- Both columns: Foreign Licence Exchange in Hanoi: Prepare Documents Before a Long-Term Motorbike Rental is this site’s page on documents to prepare before a long-term rental.
What the pages leave out
- A second-hand price, a resale price or the time a sale takes.
- The tax office’s table value for any bike, which is why the tax lines above use Honda’s shown prices as stand-ins, so the real tax and fee band could differ. Honda’s pages give no date for the prices and do not say whether they include tax or which version they belong to.
- Which exchange row applies to a given transfer, and the start date of the 2025 fee amendment.
- Whether a visitor without a residence card can register a motorbike: the pages name only cards, for foreigners who live and work in Vietnam.
- Prices for insurance, servicing, parking and fuel.
- Booking terms beyond the reference ranges, which are a question for the shop.
