Kieu Ky Gold-Leaf Village in Gia Lam: Visits, Distances and Workshop Questions
About 7 minutes to read
Pages dated 2020 to 2025 describe visits to Kieu Ky gold-leaf village in Gia Lam, yet none gives a motorbike ride time to the village, opening hours or a fee. This guide sets out what each page says, with its date, and turns the gaps into questions to ask a workshop. The pages were read on 27 October 2026; hours, prices and rituals change, so confirm by phone before riding out and again on arrival.
Where Kieu Ky sits now
Pages from 2020 to 2024 place the village in Kieu Ky commune, Gia Lam district. Origin Vietnam, a tour operator whose Gia Lam guide shows a 22 October 2026 update, says the district tier was abolished on 1 July 2025 and that a new Gia Lam commune covers the area around the old Trau Quy town, Kieu Ky and the Vinhomes Ocean Park township. A trade-magazine article of 24 September 2025 already writes “xã Gia Lâm” (Gia Lam commune), so listings may carry either name. Ask the workshop for a map pin rather than relying on an administrative name.
Distances and the one private-vehicle route the pages give
The Vietnam Craft Villages magazine (10 May 2023) and Green SM, a ride-hailing company (24 December 2024), measure from the city centre, not from Gia Lam bus station.
| Page (date) | Measured | Stated |
|---|---|---|
| Craft Villages magazine (10 May 2023) | City centre to Kieu Ky | about 20 km north-east |
| Green SM (24 Dec 2024) | City centre to Kieu Ky | about 17-18 km |
| Green SM | Kieu Ky to Vinhomes Ocean Park | about 2.5 km |
| Green SM | Kieu Ky to Nguyen Phi Y Lan temple | about 4.5 km |
| Green SM | Kieu Ky to Bat Trang pottery village | 7 km |
Green SM’s route for private vehicles runs over Chuong Duong bridge, then “Long Biên Xuân Quan”, Co Linh road and Da Ton, and ends on Nguyen Quy Tri road. Ha Noi Moi, the Hanoi city media agency’s newspaper, reported on 12 October 2023 that Hanoi named the village road after the craft ancestor Nguyen Quy Tri in 2021, which matches that last road name. Green SM does not explain “Long Biên Xuân Quan”, says nothing about which bridges or roads suit motorbikes, and adds that its details may change without notice. No page measures a ride from Gia Lam bus station, so check that distance on a map before setting out. Hanoi Motorbike Routes in Google Maps: Check Expressways Before Riding covers previewing a route.
What a workshop visit looked like
A Craft Villages report dated 11 July 2020 visits the home of artisan Le Ba Chung, director of the village’s gold-leaf cooperative, where hammering from the start of the lane draws visitors inside. Part of the plot was a production workshop and part the family home, and the artisan led visitors through the production process. The commune chairman is quoted saying that a craft-ancestor hall, which the commune helped villagers build in 2018 at a total investment of 8.6 billion VND, teaches the craft to village children and displays and introduces the village’s products to visitors.
A 24 September 2025 article in the same magazine calls experience tourism a promising direction and says visitors get the chance to join in the hand-craft stages, with products also shown at a village showroom and at trade fairs. It names no workshop that offers this and gives no booking details. Ha Noi Moi (12 October 2023) adds that the craft entered the national intangible cultural heritage list on 9 March 2021 and that the village’s communal house, temple and pagoda cluster was ranked as a monument in 1996.
When the hammers are quiet
Le Ba Chung told the magazine on 10 May 2023 that the craft year ends on “30 Tết”, Lunar New Year’s Eve, and restarts with the khai tràng ritual, the first hammering, on the 12th day of the first lunar month. The 2025 article says the village holds a spring festival on that day, and Green SM says the village marks its craft ancestor with a memorial ceremony on the 17th day of the eighth lunar month, the day he left the village. No page says whether workshops take visitors during Tet week or on either day, and none converts those lunar dates to solar calendar dates for any year, so treat both as points to confirm.
What is made, and what is not gold leaf
The 2025 article says the cooperative has nine products with city-level OCOP (one commune, one product) certificates of three to four stars, among them a statue of Tran Quoc Tuan, a bronze drum and a lotus bowl, and that gilding goes onto craft items, worship statues, thrones, paintings and ceramics. The 2023 piece credits artisan Le Ba Chung with two four-star products: Bình Hút Lộc and a gold feng shui statue, Thiềm Thừ. Green SM adds that the commune is also a centre for leather and imitation-leather goods, so a shop selling bags is not necessarily selling gold leaf. In 2020 Le Ba Chung said cheaper industrial leaf from China, though lower in quality, was still chosen by many customers. No page gives a price for any item.
Questions to put to a workshop
General guidance, not from the pages: each question responds to something a page reports or leaves out.
- May visitors come in today, and is there a fee? No page gives hours or charges for a workshop, the craft-ancestor hall or the showroom.
- Which stage can be watched? The 2023 article says cutting and leaf transfer happen in a closed room with no fan, because a light breeze can blow the leaf away. Ask whether that room is open to visitors and where to stand.
- Is the leaf gold, silver or something else, and where was it made? The 2020 report says cheaper industrial leaf competes with the village’s own.
- Which pieces on the shelf were gilded in the village, and which were only brought in to sell?
- Is the price shown, and how is a fragile piece wrapped for a ride?
- Where may a bike be left, and may people at work be photographed?

Pairing Kieu Ky with Bat Trang
The 2023 article says the authorities have joined Bat Trang pottery village, Duong Xa and other craft villages into a visiting route for tourists. The 2020 report says Kieu Ky needs stronger links with other sights to form a craft and spiritual route from Hanoi through Bat Trang, Chu Dong Tu temple, Kieu Ky, Ba Tam pagoda and Giong temple in Phu Dong; that is a proposal, and no page describes a ready route for riders. Green SM puts Bat Trang 7 km from Kieu Ky, so as an example, Kieu Ky to Bat Trang and back is 7 + 7 = 14 km before any detour. What the pages leave out
- Hours and fees: no opening days, entry charges, booking rules or group limits for any workshop, hall or showroom.
- Riding: no motorbike ride time to Kieu Ky, no route from Gia Lam bus station and nothing on parking at the village; Origin Vietnam’s motorbike and taxi notes (follow a map app; 30 to 45 minutes by taxi from the Old Quarter) are for Gia Lam as a whole, not Kieu Ky. General guidance: check that every bridge a map app suggests is open to motorbikes before riding.
- Prices: none for a gilded item or for leaf.
- Conflicts: 20 km against 17-18 km from the centre; the craft’s age as over 300 years (2025 magazine, Ha Noi Moi, Green SM), four centuries (2023 magazine) or around 400 years (Origin Vietnam).
- Names: only a tour operator explains the 2025 change, and none of the six pages is on an official government (.gov.vn) site.
- Weather and daylight: no official weather page was read and no page covers daylight; Origin Vietnam gives only a general season note for Gia Lam as a whole.
- Rental: nothing on riding a rented bike to Kieu Ky; ask the shop.
