Bac Ninh From Hanoi by Motorbike: Dong Ho Village, Two Pagodas and the Route Details to Confirm
About 7 minutes to read
A Bac Ninh day trip from Hanoi by motorbike that starts at the Dong Ho print village can be sketched from ten pages read on 26 and 27 October 2026, but only part of it is firm. Official Bắc Ninh and national heritage pages describe the print craft, the conservation centre and two pagodas in Thuận Thành. Two commercial pages supply the road directions; they differ from each other on the route and from the official page on distance.
What the craft is and what UNESCO listed
UNESCO’s listing page describes Đông Hồ folk woodblock printing as the making of coloured prints from carved wooden blocks in a village of Bắc Ninh province, and shows it as inscribed in 2025 on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
A report on the Hạp Lĩnh ward portal, dated 12 December 2025 and credited to the Bắc Ninh provincial portal, adds that the craft in Đông Khê quarter was inscribed at 14:38 on 9 December, New Delhi time. It says the craft arose about 500 years ago, the blocks are cut from thị wood, and red prints first with the black outline block last. It also says the number of skilled artisans has fallen sharply and lists seven safeguarding goals, starting with teaching classes. For reading the images themselves, see Dong Ho Prints in Hanoi Collections: Read a Woodblock Image.
The conservation centre: hours and figures
The Bắc Ninh tourism information site published a page on the Đông Hồ Folk Painting Conservation Centre on 18 August 2026. It says the province built the centre in Thuận Thành ward in 2018 on almost 20,000 m² and put it into use in 2023. It has a seven-bay display house with old woodblocks and classic prints, and visitors can try some hand-printing steps with an artisan. Bắc Ninh Museum No. 2 manages it.
The page gives opening hours of 08:00 to 16:30 every day of the week, holidays included, and says the centre received almost 19 thousand visits in the first six months of 2026, about 20% from abroad. Hours change, so confirm them on the official page or by phone first. The page gives no ticket price, phone number or booking rule.
Two pagodas in Thuận Thành
The Bắc Ninh tourism site (20 November 2025) places Bút Tháp pagoda on the south bank of the Đuống River and says it became a special national monument in 2013. It describes a 3.7 m Quan Âm statue and gives the festival as the 23rd and 24th of the third lunar month, drawing tens of thousands of visitors. Confirm the festival dates on an official page before leaving.
An undated Cultural Heritage Department page lists Dâu pagoda (Chùa Dâu) as a special national monument by Decision 2383/QĐ-TTg of 9 December 2013. It says old records place its founding in the 2nd century and that it is regarded as the country’s first Buddhist centre. A 15 October 2025 tourism page lists a tour built with travel companies: Bắc Ninh Museum, Bút Tháp, Dâu, Đông Hồ, Đền Đô, Nam Hồng Royal Museum, Bắc Ninh Museum.
Putting stops together: an example sum
No page gives the distance from Bút Tháp to Dâu or a total time for the stops, so the sum below is only an example. artnam.vn puts the ride from central Hanoi at under one hour and Dong Ho to Bút Tháp at 10 to 15 minutes by vehicle; together that is under 1 hour 15 minutes before any stop or the return. The centre closes at 16:30. The U.S. Naval Observatory table for Hanoi in 2026 lists sunset at 17:15 on 15 November and 17:36 on 15 January, so a rider leaving the centre at 16:30 on 15 November has 45 minutes before sunset. For setting a cutoff, see Fatigue on a Hanoi Motorbike Day Trip: Rest Stops and a Return Cutoff.
Road choices from Hanoi to the village
artnam.vn starts its motorbike route from central Hanoi, while mia.vn names no starting point and gives one route for motorbikes and cars. Neither road route starts from Long Biên, the two describe different roads, and neither says whether a rented motorbike may use them.
| Page | Road described | Figures stated |
|---|---|---|
| artnam.vn, a decorative-art shop blog, undated | National Route 5 toward Hải Phòng, left at the Phú Thụy crossroads onto Route 38, over Hồ bridge, then left for about 2 km | Under 1 hour; about 35 km east of central Hanoi |
| mia.vn, a luggage retailer blog, metadata dated 21 March 2025 | Route 5 to near the Phú Thị crossroads, left onto 18B through Phố Sủi, Chợ Keo and Chợ Dâu, then left onto the dyke road; or from Chợ Dâu to Hồ town, left onto Route 38, left at Thiên Đức road near Hồ bridge | About 3 km on the dyke road or 2 km on Thiên Đức road; about 35 km from Hanoi |
Both pages also describe bus 204 from the Long Biên interchange to Hồ town, then a motorbike taxi into the village. artnam.vn mentions the Hanoi to Bắc Giang expressway only in its paragraph on cars. Check each road in a map app first; see Hanoi Motorbike Routes in Google Maps: Check Expressways Before Riding.
Where the pages disagree
| Point | One page | Another page |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Hanoi | Centre page: old village 45 km north | artnam.vn: about 35 km east; mia.vn: about 35 km |
| Distance from Bắc Ninh | Centre page: 35 km to the provincial administrative centre | artnam.vn and mia.vn: about 16 km to the city centre |
| Age of the craft | Ward portal: about 500 years; centre page: over 400 | artnam.vn: from the 11th century; mia.vn: 16th century |
| Year the Bút Tháp Quan Âm statue became a national treasure | Tourism page: 2012 | Cultural Heritage Department: 2011 |
| Afternoon visit | Centre page: closes 16:30 | mia.vn suggests 14:00 to 17:00 |
The pages do not explain the gaps, so no distance is adopted here. artnam.vn says the village was formerly in Song Hồ commune; mia.vn gives Song Hồ commune as its address.
Visiting a family workshop
artnam.vn names two family places in Đông Khê, the centre of artisan Nguyễn Đăng Chế’s family and the workshop of the late artisan Nguyễn Hữu Sam’s family. On manners it says to ask the artisan before filming or photographing old woodblocks and not to touch the blocks or prints still drying.
artnam.vn (undated) and mia.vn (metadata dated 21 March 2025) quote prices for village entry, hands-on printing and prints. No official page confirms them, and none clearly prices the provincial centre: artnam.vn’s row headed entry to the conservation centre describes display areas in artisans’ homes. No figure is repeated here. mia.vn also advises modest, comfortable clothing if pagodas are on the plan, quiet in the village, and careful riding on the dyke roads, where it says accidents can happen.
mia.vn mentions a print festival and a print market and gives lunar dates for both. No official page read mentions either, so no date is repeated here; confirm with an official source before planning around one. General guidance, not from the pages: ask where a motorbike may be left, whether photos are welcome and what hands-on printing costs before joining.
What the pages leave out
No official page gives a ticket price for the provincial centre, Bút Tháp or Dâu, or opening hours for the two pagodas, and the official pages give no dress or behaviour rules. No page says where a motorbike can be parked at the village, the centre or either pagoda; artnam.vn mentions convenient parking only in its car paragraph. No page measures a motorbike ride from Long Biên or says which roads suit a rented motorbike. The only daylight source is the 2026 sun table, which is not a forecast. No page says whether workshops need a booking.
