Arriving by Coach at Gia Lam Bus Station: Collect Your Rental Nearby or Ask About Delivery

About 6 minutes to read
A sleeper coach into Gia Lam Bus Station can arrive before dawn or late in the evening, so a rental pickup after the ride has to fit the shop’s opening hours. To collect a motorbike smoothly after a coach to Gia Lam, match the coach’s arrival time to the shop’s hours and plan ahead for a coach that turns up early or late. This guide shows how to use an early-morning wait, how to work out the timing in the evening and what to ask before you travel. Apart from the address and opening hours, it does not claim that the shop hands over bikes outside opening hours, delivers to the bus station or holds a bike when you arrive late: those are questions to ask, and the answers are worth having in a message.
What is known about the shop, and what you still need to ask
Motorbike Nguyen Ha is at Alley 5 Nguyen Van Cu, Bo De, Long Bien, Hanoi (near Gia Lam Bus Station) and opens from 09:00 to 21:00 every day. When you plan, keep what is already known separate from what is still waiting for the shop’s answer.
| Item | Known | Ask the shop |
|---|---|---|
| Opening hours | 09:00–21:00 every day | Is there any way to collect a bike before 09:00 or after 21:00? |
| Getting from the station to the shop | The shop is near Gia Lam Bus Station | Which way to walk from the point where the coach drops passengers |
| Delivery to the bus station | Not confirmed | Is it offered, where would you meet, and is there an extra charge? |
| A late coach | Not confirmed | Will the bike be held, until what time, and how should you let the shop know? |
| When the rental time starts | Not confirmed | From the agreed time, or from the moment you actually collect the bike? |
Coach arrives at dawn: use the wait before 09:00
A hypothetical example: the coach company says the coach will reach the station at 05:30, which leaves 3 hours 30 minutes before the shop opens. A night on a sleeper coach may not give you a full sleep, and riding into busy streets while your eyes are still heavy is best avoided.
- When you book, ask whether a pickup earlier than 09:00 is possible; if it is not, do not turn up and wait outside the door.
- Find a covered place to sit where you can have breakfast, freshen up and charge your phone.
- Judge honestly whether you are alert enough to ride; if your head still feels heavy, rest longer or move the pickup time. The same trade-off between tiredness and rental time is discussed in starting a rental on arrival day or day two.
- Do not rush the bike check because the wait was long: still take photos (the handover shot list gives an order) and test the brakes, lights and horn before you sign for the bike.
Coach arrives in the evening: count back from 21:00
When the coach gets in at the end of the day, work out whether the time between stepping off and 21:00 still leaves enough for a pickup. The figures in the table are assumptions: the coach is due at 19:10, getting from the drop-off point to the shop takes 20 minutes, and the shop has said that a pickup takes 30 minutes.
| Case | Time you reach the shop | Left until 21:00 | Conclusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coach on time | 19:10 + 20 minutes = 19:30 | 90 minutes | Enough, with 60 minutes to spare |
| Coach 40 minutes late | 19:50 + 20 minutes = 20:10 | 50 minutes | Still in time, with 20 minutes to spare |
| Coach 80 minutes late | 20:30 + 20 minutes = 20:50 | 10 minutes | Less than the 30 minutes needed; arrange the next morning |
Replace these with the real figures for your trip. If the margin is too thin, arrange the pickup for the next morning and ask how the rental time will be counted in that case.
Walk to the shop or ask about delivery to the station
Because the shop is near Gia Lam Bus Station, collecting the bike yourself can be the simplest option, but your luggage and how you feel after the journey may make you want to ask about delivery.
- Go to the shop yourself: you check the bike on the spot and ask your questions in person. Before you get off the coach, look up the route from the drop-off point to the shop’s address and decide whether to walk or book a ride.
- Ask about delivery: only count on it once the shop confirms it. Then ask exactly where you will meet, what it costs if anything, and where you can check the bike before signing for it.
- Travelling with a large suitcase: ask beforehand whether there is somewhere to leave your bags while you check the bike, and think about whether that luggage can be carried safely on a motorbike (carrying a suitcase on a rental scooter covers the rules and the alternatives).
The delivery and pickup guide explains how rental bikes are delivered and collected; what applies to your own trip is still worth confirming by message. If you are arriving by air or starting from the Old Quarter instead, see getting to Long Bien without a bike.
If the coach company says you are running late
- Ask the coach attendant for the new arrival time and the point where passengers will be dropped off.
- Message the shop as soon as you know, with the booking name, the original pickup time and the new expected time.
- Redo the calculation in the table above; if there is not enough time, move the pickup to the next morning yourself.
- Keep the message thread so that both sides remember the time you agreed.
A sample message: “Hello, this is [name]. I booked a pickup at [time] today, but my coach is running late and is now expected at Gia Lam Bus Station at [new time]. Could you hold the bike until then? If I can’t make it before 21:00, what time could I collect it tomorrow morning?” If no reply has come by the time you arrive, no reply from a rental shop sets out what to do next.
What not to do
- Ride straight after stepping off the coach while you are still sleepy or dizzy.
- Assume the shop hands over bikes outside 09:00 to 21:00 before you have an answer.
- Wait at the station expecting someone to bring the bike when nobody has confirmed it.
- Follow a map on your phone while riding the first stretch from the shop to your accommodation; check the route while the bike is still parked.
More reading for planning the timing
The pickup time can affect how rental days are counted; what counts as one rental day compares a full 24 hours with a calendar day. After a night on a coach your phone may be nearly flat, so write the shop’s phone number and address on paper before you set off; charging your phone on a rental motorbike explains what to check before relying on the bike’s port.
Questions for the shop before you board the coach
- If the coach reaches the station before 09:00 or after 21:00, is there any way to collect the bike?
- If the coach company says it is running late, should you call or message, and will the shop hold the bike, and until when?
