Start Your Rental on Arrival Day or Day Two? Weigh Jet Lag Against a Day’s Rent

About 4 minutes to read

Should you start a Hanoi rental on arrival day or on day two? If you land in the afternoon after a long flight, the choice is between a bike you may barely use that day and getting through the evening without it. The cheaper option is not always the wiser one, because riding for the first time in Hanoi while jet-lagged is a different risk from riding after a night’s sleep.

What starting on day one really costs

Reference prices at Thuê xe máy Nguyễn Hà for a manual or automatic bike run from 150,000 to 200,000 VND for a day; confirm the bike and the rate before booking. Starting on arrival day may mean paying for an extra day, depending on how the shop counts a rental day, and for most of that day the bike would sit outside your hotel while you sleep. Starting on day two means finding another way to get from the airport and through your first evening, usually by taxi or ride-hailing. Ask the shop how it counts a rental day before you decide, because that changes how much of a day you actually use.

Four questions that settle it

  1. How tired will you be? After a long flight with little sleep, attention and reaction speed are lower than usual. If you would not feel fit to drive a car, you are not fit to start on a motorbike in an unfamiliar city.
  2. How much daylight is left? Riding in an unfamiliar city for the first time is harder in the dark, and an afternoon arrival can mean you reach the shop close to dusk.
  3. Is the shop open when you will be there? Thuê xe máy Nguyễn Hà is open 09:00–21:00 daily. If your flight or transfer will put you outside those hours, ask the shop whether anything can be arranged; do not assume it. The guide to a late-flight motorbike pickup and return covers what to agree beforehand.
  4. What will you actually do with the bike on day one? If the plan is a short ride to dinner and then bed, the extra day buys you very little.

A table by arrival time

You arriveUsually the better choiceWhy
Morning, after a decent night’s sleepStart on arrival dayDaylight, energy and a full day ahead
Morning, after an overnight flight with little sleepRest first; start the next morningFatigue is the main risk, not the cost
AfternoonUsually day twoYou may pay for a day you mostly spend checking in and resting
Evening, after the shop has closed or close to closing timeDay twoThe shop opens 09:00–21:00, so ask before relying on a same-evening pickup; a first ride in the dark is a poor start

None of this is a rule, because people differ. Some travellers feel perfectly alert after a long journey and have a quiet plan for the afternoon. Be honest with yourself about that, and if you still collect on day one, use the gentle start below.

If you collect on day one anyway

If you do decide to start on arrival day, make it a gentle start. Keep to daylight and to a short, simple loop near your accommodation. Avoid rush hour, rain and any route you have not looked at on a map. Look at the route from the shop to your accommodation on a map beforehand and ask the shop for the simplest way to go. Check that the lights, horn, brakes and mirrors work before you leave the shop, and that you can put both feet near the ground. Plan to park the bike when you feel tired rather than push on. If you have been awake for a very long time, it is better to leave the bike parked and ride the next morning.

If you choose day two

Tell the shop your arrival time and ask what time you can collect the bike the next morning, since it opens at 09:00. Arrange how you will reach your accommodation on arrival: a taxi or a ride-hailing app is the usual answer, and it is worth keeping the cost in mind when you compare the two options. If you arrive by overnight train, the guide to renting a motorbike after an overnight train to Hanoi covers timing the pickup. The guide to writing a motorbike rental booking message for Hanoi gives a message you can copy, and your first ride is covered in motorbike riding tips for first-time riders.

Deciding quickly

If you are unsure, choose day two. A rest night saves a day’s rent and costs a fare; a mistake on your first ride can cost much more. For the reference prices, see the motorbike rental prices in Hanoi page, or browse the Rental Prices & Budgets category.
