Scooter Fuel Cost per 100 km in Vietnam: Declared Litres and 22 October 2026 Price Ceilings
About 6 minutes to read
Scooter fuel consumption and cost can be worked out from two figures: the litres per 100 km a manufacturer states and the dated price per litre. This article takes Honda Vietnam and Yamaha Motor Vietnam consumption figures and the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s maximum petrol prices from 15:00 on 22 October 2026. Every cost below is arithmetic of the form: if the price is X VND per litre, then Y VND per 100 km. None of the pages covers rental bikes, and the section “What the pages leave out” lists what is missing.
What the makers declare
Honda’s Vision page states 1.82 litres per 100 km (written 1,82 on the Vietnamese page). Yamaha’s Janus 125 limited-edition page states 1.98. Honda’s comparison pages list 2.12 and 2.23 for the Air Blade columns and 2.1 for LEAD ABS. The table gives each with the tank capacity the same page shows.
| Model as the page lists it | Declared litres per 100 km | Tank capacity, litres |
|---|---|---|
| Honda Vision | 1.82 | 4.8 |
| Yamaha Janus 125, limited-edition page | 1.98 | 4.2 |
| Honda LEAD ABS, 124.8 cm3 | 2.1 | 6.0 |
| Honda Air Blade, 124.8 cm3 columns | 2.12 | 4.4 |
| Honda Air Blade, 156.9 cm3 columns | 2.23 | 4.4 |
Honda’s two comparison pages show several columns without naming the variants in the text read, so each figure is tied to the engine size shown. The Janus page lists other versions in its menu, whose figures were not read. None of these pages states the test conditions behind its figure, which fuel was used, or whether the figure is the one declared for the energy label.
Some of these pages describe features that bear on fuel use. Honda’s Vision page lists a 109.5 cm3 four-stroke air-cooled engine with PGM-FI fuel injection and an idling-stop system that switches the engine off after more than 3 seconds stationary and restarts it when the throttle is turned; it says the system helps save fuel. The LEAD ABS comparison page lists Idling Stop and PGM-FI, and Yamaha’s Janus page lists electronic fuel injection. None of the pages says whether the declared figures were measured with idling stop active.
The price used
The Ministry’s notice of 22 October 2026 sets maximum retail prices of 25,361 VND per litre for E5RON92 and 25,213 VND per litre for E10RON95-III from 15:00 that day. They are ceilings, written as not higher than, and the notice does not break them down by city. Petrolimex’s page says that on 15 October 2026 it decided to sell its fuels 300 VND per litre or kilogram below the price set by the pricing mechanism, applied at least until 29 October. The price table in its 22 October notice could not be read, so no station price is used. Its related-news list shows price notices on 17 and 24 September and on 1 and 8 October, plus a 15 October release on its 300 VND reduction, which makes any price here a dated figure.
Cost per 100 km and per kilometre
Multiplying litres per 100 km by the price per litre gives VND per 100 km. The results are computed here from the pages’ figures and are not stated by any page.
| Model | VND per 100 km at 25,213 | VND per 100 km at 25,361 | VND per km at 25,213 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honda Vision | 45,888 | 46,157 | 459 |
| Yamaha Janus 125 | 49,922 | 50,215 | 499 |
| Honda LEAD ABS | 52,947 | 53,258 | 529 |
| Honda Air Blade, 124.8 cm3 | 53,452 | 53,765 | 535 |
| Honda Air Blade, 156.9 cm3 | 56,225 | 56,555 | 562 |
So if the price is 25,213 VND per litre, the Vision figure gives about 459 VND per kilometre and the larger Air Blade figure about 562. For budget prices and what to check on a bike, see Cheap Motorbike Rental in Hanoi – Budget Prices & What to Check.
One tank at the stated figure
Dividing tank capacity by the declared consumption gives the distance a full tank would cover if the declared figure held. Multiplying capacity by the price gives what filling a whole tank from empty would cost at 25,213 VND per litre. Both columns are computed here.
| Model | Tank capacity, litres | Distance on one tank, km | Whole tank at 25,213, VND |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honda Vision | 4.8 | about 264 | 121,022 |
| Yamaha Janus 125 | 4.2 | about 212 | 105,895 |
| Honda LEAD ABS | 6.0 | about 286 | 151,278 |
| Honda Air Blade, 124.8 cm3 | 4.4 | about 208 | 110,937 |
| Honda Air Blade, 156.9 cm3 | 4.4 | about 197 | 110,937 |
The pages give tank capacity, not how much a refill from empty takes, so the last column is the cost of the full capacity and not a statement about any refill.
How much the price assumption matters
Each 100 VND difference in the price per litre moves the cost per 100 km by 100 times the litres figure: 182 VND for Vision’s 1.82 and 223 VND for the 2.23 Air Blade columns. If a pump price were 300 VND lower, as Petrolimex describes for its own prices from 15 October (300 VND below the price set by the pricing mechanism, which its page does not equate with the Ministry ceiling), the Vision figure would give 546 VND less per 100 km. The 148 VND gap between the two ceilings moves the Vision result by 269 VND per 100 km.
What a declared figure is and what is unknown
A 2020 article on energy labels, citing Circular 59/2018/TT-BGTVT, defines a vehicle’s fuel consumption as the fuel used over a distance under a defined test condition and test cycle, in litres per 100 km. It reports the head of the Vietnam Register’s emissions test centre as saying that for motorbike energy labels the makers test and declare the figures themselves and take responsibility, and that the Register still carries out post-checks. That article lists figures declared at the time: Yamaha Janus standard 1.87, Honda LEAD 2.02, Air Blade 1.99 and Vision 1.87 litres per 100 km. The current pages differ, with Vision at 1.82, the Janus limited edition at 1.98, LEAD ABS at 2.1 and Air Blade at 2.12 and 2.23. No page explains the differences, and the 2020 article names no versions or engine sizes, so the models may not be like for like.
The Ministry’s question-and-answer page of 29 May 2026 adds that for some vehicle types in some tests E10 used about 2 to 3% more fuel than the same mineral petrol, while for other vehicle types in some tests the result was the opposite. It compares E10 with mineral petrol, not with E5, so it does not say how the two current grades differ in consumption.
What the pages leave out
No page covers rented scooters, their real-world fuel use or any shop’s fuel arrangements. The Honda and Yamaha pages give no test conditions. The Ministry notice gives one set of national ceilings with none broken out for Hanoi, and no station price was readable. Tank figures are capacities, and no page gives what a refill takes or the level at the low-fuel warning. The Janus figure belongs to the limited-edition page, while the 2020 article gives a different figure for the standard edition, and no page says why.
