Weekend-Only Rides: Short Rentals Each Weekend or One Bike Held All Week?

About 5 minutes to read
If you live in Hanoi, get to work by bus and only want a bike on Saturdays and Sundays, you have two ways to rent: short rentals each weekend, or one monthly booking that sits parked on weekdays. The second sounds wasteful, but at the shop’s reference prices it can be the cheaper of the two. Whether it is depends on a number you can count from your calendar: how many weekends you will really ride in a month.
Count the weekend dates inside your booking
Mark the actual Saturdays and Sundays between your agreed pickup and final return dates. A calendar month can contain eight, nine or ten weekend days, and a rental month may use a different start or end date. Count only the dates you expect to book. The table below uses two-day weekend bookings as an illustration; a partial weekend needs its own day count and quote.
What the reference prices say
Thuê xe máy Nguyễn Hà lists reference prices for a semi-automatic bike of 150,000 to 200,000 VND a day and 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 VND a month. They are reference ranges, so the figures for your bike need confirming when you book. The table sets the day-by-day total for each number of weekends against the full monthly price:
| Weekends ridden in the month | Riding days | Day by day | One month | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 4 | 600,000 to 800,000 VND | 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 VND | Day by day is cheaper by 200,000 to 600,000 VND |
| 3 | 6 | 900,000 to 1,200,000 VND | 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 VND | Close: day by day is ahead by 100,000 to 300,000 VND at the low day rate, and the month is ahead by up to 200,000 VND at the high one |
| 4 | 8 | 1,200,000 to 1,600,000 VND | 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 VND | The month is cheaper, or at worst equal, by up to 600,000 VND |
The break-even sits at roughly three weekends a month: if you will ride every weekend the month is cheaper or equal, if you will ride only two weekends paying by the day is cheaper, and at three weekends the exact rates decide. A fifth weekend widens the gap: ten riding days by the day cost 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 VND, so the month saves 300,000 to 1,000,000 VND. Use the exact figures from the shop’s quote; the ranges above are only the reference ends.
What the table does not show
- A parked bike needs a safe place. A bike you hold on weekdays has to sleep somewhere secure, and any parking fee at your building comes off the saving.
- Short rentals mean trips to the shop. Unless the shop offers another way to hand over and take back the bike, which you can ask about, each weekend needs a trip to collect it and a trip to return it. Thuê xe máy Nguyễn Hà is at Ngõ 5 Nguyễn Văn Cừ, Bồ Đề, Long Biên, near Gia Lâm bus station. Count the fare and the time of getting there and home again: two bus journeys a weekend, or eight to ten in a month with four or five weekends.
- The shop’s hours shape the weekend. The shop is open 09:00 to 21:00 daily, so plan to collect and return the bike within those hours and ask before you count on anything earlier or later. Ask also how a Saturday-and-Sunday rental is counted as rental days before you trust a two-day price.
- Availability is not guaranteed. With short rentals you need a bike free on the days you want it; ask whether you can reserve one in advance.
- A month also covers weekday evenings. A midweek errand or a ride after work adds no rental fee on a monthly booking, while on short rentals it needs another rental.
- Holding a weekly block for one weekend does not help. A weekend by the day costs 2 × 150,000 to 2 × 200,000 VND, that is 300,000 to 400,000 VND, while a week costs 700,000 to 800,000 VND, so holding the bike for a week to ride two days costs 300,000 to 500,000 VND more.
You can mix the two, if the shop agrees
You do not have to pick one approach for the whole year if the shop agrees to switching: ask whether you can take the monthly rate in some months and short rentals in others. In a month with four or five weekends you would hold the month, and in a month with only two you would rent day by day. Check each month’s calendar once, count the weekends, and decide. If your dates are uncertain, compare the amount you would commit upfront, parking costs, the early-return terms and the cost of separate bookings. At these reference ranges a month used for only two full weekends costs 200,000 to 600,000 VND more than day-by-day bookings; ten separately rented days cost 300,000 to 1,000,000 VND more than a month. Those are conditional examples, not a reason to commit to a month before you know your likely use.
Questions to ask the shop
- Does the monthly rate apply when I ride mostly at weekends, and what changes if I want to return the bike early?
- Can I keep the bike at my building, and is there anything I should do to keep it secure?
- How is a Saturday-and-Sunday rental counted: as two rental days, or by hours?
- If I need the bike a few hours longer on Sunday evening, what do I pay? The shop’s confirmed extension fee is 20,000 VND per hour and more than 6 hours counts as one rental day, but the shop closes at 21:00, so ask how a late Sunday return is handled.
