Explaining a Breakdown Without Vietnamese: Photos, Translation Apps and Simple Phone Scripts

About 4 minutes to read

You do not need to speak Vietnamese to explain a motorbike breakdown, but you do need to prepare three things in advance: where you are, what is wrong and who you want to speak to. If your rental bike stops working in Hanoi and you cannot explain the problem in Vietnamese, photos, a map pin, a translation app and a few short written phrases will do most of the work.

Before anything goes wrong: what to save in your phone

  • The shop’s contact details. Save the phone number and the address in your phone: Thuê xe máy Nguyễn Hà, Ngõ 5 Nguyễn Văn Cừ, Bồ Đề, Long Biên, Hà Nội, phone 0334 699 969, open 09:00–21:00 daily.
  • A photo of the bike’s number plate and its overall condition. This helps you describe the bike and shows its state at the start.
  • Your accommodation’s address written in Vietnamese. Ask the hotel to write it on a card or in a message, so you can show it to anyone if you need a lift or help getting back.

Step 1: make yourself and the bike safe

When something goes wrong, pull over as far from the traffic as you safely can, switch the engine off and stand away from the roadway. Do not try to repair the bike yourself. If the bike smells of fuel, is smoking or you are unsure whether it is safe, move away from it before you do anything else. Once you are safe, you can think about explaining the problem.

Step 2: capture the problem in three photos

PhotoWhat it showsWhy it helps
The problem itselfA close-up of the flat tyre, the warning light, the damage or the part that has failedA picture says what you cannot say in words
The whole bike and its surroundingsThe bike where it stopped, with a landmark in view if possibleHelps someone find you and understand the situation
The dashboardAny warning light or message, and the fuel or battery levelHelps the shop tell what kind of fault it is

Take photos only from a safe spot away from traffic; skip a photo rather than step into the road. Then send your location as a map pin, not just a street name; the guide to sending a useful motorbike breakdown location pin when GPS is inaccurate explains how.

Step 3: message the shop first

Tell the shop before you pay anyone to repair a rental bike, and ask how they would like it handled. Keep your message short and complete. You can copy this structure:

  • My name and the bike (type and plate number).
  • Where I am (map pin) and whether I am safe.
  • What happened in one sentence (for example: “The scooter will not start” or “The rear tyre is flat”).
  • The photos.
  • What I need: advice, a repair or help getting back; please tell me what you can offer.

The shop’s hours are listed above, so do not assume anyone will answer outside them; if the problem happens after 21:00, the guide to a motorbike breakdown after 21:00 helps you prepare a safe waiting plan. For a fuller list for the most common fault, see the guide to what to send the shop when a rental scooter will not start.

Step 4: if a passer-by or a mechanic offers to help

Show them your phone instead of trying to describe things aloud. A few short phrases, written or displayed, cover most situations:

You want to sayShow this Vietnamese
My motorbike has a problem.Xe của tôi bị hỏng.
It will not start.Xe không nổ máy.
I have a flat tyre.Xe bị thủng lốp.
I am here (point to the map pin).Tôi đang ở đây.
Could you call this number for me?Anh/chị có thể gọi số này giúp tôi được không?
Please wait; I am calling the rental shop.Xin đợi một chút, tôi gọi cho cửa hàng thuê xe.
Please do not start repairs yet; I need to ask the rental shop first.Xin đừng sửa vội, tôi cần hỏi cửa hàng thuê xe trước.
Thank you.Cảm ơn anh/chị.

Put the shop’s number on screen and point to it if someone is willing to phone on your behalf, and do not let anyone take the bike away without the shop knowing.

Using a translation app well

Keep sentences short and plain: one idea at a time, in simple words, works better than a long explanation. If your app supports it, download the Vietnamese language pack before you travel, so it works without a signal. Show the text on the screen rather than only speaking it, because reading is often easier than listening for someone who is busy. Use the camera mode for signs and labels. If the app gives a strange result, rephrase it more simply or fall back on the photos.
