Ca Tru in Hanoi: What the Sung Poetry Is and Which Venue Details to Confirm First

About 7 minutes to read

Ca tru is a form of sung poetry from northern Vietnam, and the pages read for this article name several Hanoi venues with listed ca tru performances for visitors, among them đình Kim Ngân at 42-44 Hàng Bạc. This article sets out what UNESCO’s description says ca tru is, puts the venue details from five pages side by side, and shows where they disagree on prices and length. It also covers the language question and the Friday to Sunday evening restriction on motorbikes that a Vietnam News Agency report describes for the Old Quarter. The newest page was read on 26 October 2026 and the oldest is dated 2014, so every schedule below is something to confirm, not a plan.

What ca tru is

UNESCO’s listing describes ca trù as a complex form of sung poetry from the north of Viet Nam, with lyrics in traditional Vietnamese poetic forms. A group has three performers: a female singer who plays clappers or strikes a wooden box, and two instrumentalists, one on a three-stringed lute and one on a praise drum. Some performances include dance. UNESCO says ca trù has fifty-six musical forms, each called thể cách, and shows its 2009 inscription on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

A Vietnam Pictorial article of 9 December 2022 adds that ca trù was tied to giáo phường, a term for specialised professional organisations of singers that this article renders as guilds. It says the art took place in village communal houses (đình làng), shrines to deities, houses honouring a trade’s founder, residences and singing houses (ca quán). The same page lists other names, including hát ả đào and hát cô đầu.

Ca tru performance venues named in Hanoi pages

Five pages name venues. Their dates differ, so the table keeps each statement with its date.

Where the pages disagree

The days for đình Kim Ngân agree across the 2014 and 2017 pages and the Tripadvisor listing, but little else does. Entrance is 200,000 VND on the 2014 page, VND 320,000 on the listing read in October 2026 (its time and price carry no date) and free on the December 2025 page. Length is given as an hour in 2014, under 1 hour on the listing and more than an hour in 2025. The pages do not say whether the free programme and the ticketed concert are one event or two at the same address, and the 2025 programme gives ca trù one slot among five genres.

The 2022 page names venues the 2017 page does not, and Mã Mây is absent from the 2022 list. No page says a venue has opened or closed, so the table cannot show which list is current.

Language and what the programme sounds like

UNESCO describes the lyrics as written in traditional Vietnamese poetic forms. The 2017 page says the Thăng Long club introduces each piece in Vietnamese and English, explaining instruments, history and rituals. Visitor reviews on the Tripadvisor listing point in different directions: an April 2019 review mentions an English translator, while reviews dated 7 and 8 July 2026 describe limited explanations and little context in English. These are visitor opinions, not the venue’s statement.

The 2025 page quotes the head of the Hoàn Kiếm Lake and Old Quarter management board saying the old music has a highly academic timbre and that young people find it hard to approach at the beginning. The pages do not say whether sung texts are translated or shown on screen.

Reaching Hàng Bạc by bike on a Friday to Sunday evening

VietnamPlus, the Vietnam News Agency’s news site, reported on 1 July 2026 that Hanoi began a traffic plan, described by the municipal Department of Construction, to support the first phase of a low-emission zone pilot, running from July 1 to December 31. Zone 1, covering the Hoan Kiem Lake pedestrian area, the Old Quarter and the weekend night market, stays a pedestrian zone. According to the report, motorcycles, motorbikes and all cars, except vehicles of the Ministries of National Defence and Public Security, will be prohibited from entering between 7 pm and midnight every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The report gives no Zone 1 street boundary, also names the Old Quarter in its Zone 2 description (restrictions it applies to fossil fuel-powered passenger vehicles with more than 16 seats), and describes only the first phase, so a visit in 2027 needs a fresh check.

The 2025 page’s title places the programme “giữa lòng phố cổ” (in the heart of the Old Quarter), but no page says whether the stretch in front of the venue gate lies inside Zone 1. As an example only, the listing’s 8 pm start on Friday and Sunday falls after the 7 pm start of the restriction, while its Wednesday sits outside the Friday to Sunday window. This is a news report, not an official notice, so confirm the current rule and the street with the venue, the ward authorities or the bike shop before you leave.

The same report says the Department of Construction coordinated with local authorities to review and arrange 220 parking facilities and plans park-and-ride sites, but it lists no locations, so a parking spot near Hàng Bạc is not established here. For weekend pedestrian streets, see Hanoi Weekend Pedestrian Streets: Plan Your Motorbike Parking Boundary. The scheme itself is the subject of Hanoi’s Low-Emission Zone Scheme: Dates, Areas and Rules for Motorbikes, and parking tickets are covered in Hanoi Motorbike Parking: Tickets, Payment and Collection Checklist.

A checklist before choosing a night

This list is general guidance, not a statement from the pages.

  1. Ask whether the evening is ca trù only or one slot among several genres.
  2. Ask the day and start time for your date, and whether the venue is open that night.
  3. Ask the price and how it is paid.
  4. Ask whether the introduction is in English and whether lyrics are translated.
  5. Ask about seating, since the 2025 page mentions rush mats.
  6. Plan arrival and return around the 7 pm to midnight restriction and the end of the show.

Another show with its own confirm-first list is covered in Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi: What to Confirm Before Buying a Ticket.

What the pages leave out

No page read is the venue’s own schedule page; the Tripadvisor listing is a third-party page that shows its time and price without a date. No page gives booking rules, seat numbers, accessibility, dress rules or holiday schedules, and none says whether Mã Mây still hosts ca trù. No page gives a Zone 1 street boundary, a parking location, a travel time or the rules of later zone phases. The pages do not explain the 200,000 VND, VND 320,000 and free entries, and they do not confirm which venue list is current.
