Commuting Between Tay Ho and Cau Giay by Motorbike: Road Reports and Timing Checks
About 7 minutes to read
A Tay Ho to Cau Giay commute by motorbike is a route-planning question that no single page answers. None of the ten pages read for this guide describes a route between the two areas or gives a travel time for one. They are dated reports on named streets, works, parking prices and peak-hour limits in Hanoi, plus a traffic-police page on following distance, summarised below with their dates, followed by a general worksheet for timing your own trip. Street names are written as the pages give them; check each on a map against your home and work addresses. For the rental side of a daily commute, see Monthly Motorbike Rental in Hanoi: Rates and Booking.
Weekday-morning reports on named streets
Two newspapers describe single mornings. Tiền Phong, on Monday 5 October 2026, reported that at the Bưởi–Võ Chí Công–Hoàng Quốc Việt junction the flow inched along at times, and that on Trần Duy Hưng the jam was mainly in one direction while the other flowed better. Báo Văn Hóa, on 16 October 2026, reported serious jams on Xuân Thủy toward Cau Giay, a better picture in the opposite direction and a collision on the Bưởi flyover toward Cau Giay. It advised anyone passing Xuân Thủy to allow extra time and, where a suitable alternative exists, to avoid the direction that is jammed.
Ring Road 2.5: new sections, temporary operation
Dan Tri reported on 10 October 2026 that, per the Hanoi Department of Construction, nearly 20 km of Ring Road 2.5 opened for technical traffic (thông xe kỹ thuật) in four segments: the number 5 road into the Tay Ho Tây new urban area; Cau Giay–Dịch Vọng–Dương Đình Nghệ; Vũ Phạm Hàm–Trần Duy Hưng; and Ngụy Như Kon Tum–Nguyễn Trãi–Đầm Hồng. The whole route is given as about 19.41 km with a 40–50 m cross-section. An earlier Dan Tri page, dated 26 September 2026, says the 582 m section from Nguyễn Hoàng Tôn into the Tay Ho Tây area was recorded open on 25 September and is expected to improve the link from Tay Ho Tây to Cau Giay and neighbouring areas.
VOV (26 October 2026) describes a technical opening as temporary operation, not a finished road. It reports that the Ring Road 2.5 junctions with Nguyễn Trãi and Cau Giay streets were jammed at times, and that at the Cau Giay junction, with no connection and no signal yet, people detour to a U-turn point to cross, which causes peak-hour jams. It names that junction, the Xuân Đỉnh crossroads and the front of building 789 as connection points where signals were not working and wrong-way travel had occurred, and a transport-institute researcher says speed should be limited while a new road first goes into operation. For another Cau Giay-area reading, see Western Hanoi: Metro Line 3 at Cau Giay and Two Ring Road 3 Underpasses.
Works and one-way changes near Nghi Tàm and Âu Cơ
Nhân Dân (16 October 2026) reported a Department of Construction notice for phase 3 of the Tứ Liên bridge works, applied from 21 October 2026 until further notice. On Nghi Tàm and on Âu Cơ the barriered stretch is about 150 m long, and the remaining carriageway is 6–7.5 m wide. One-way traffic applies on Yên Phụ nhỏ from the Nghi Tàm junction to Thanh Niên, on Nghi Tàm from ngõ 276 to a temporary opening between piers N1-T3 and N1-T4, and on the site road from ngõ 276 Nghi Tàm to ngõ 34 Âu Cơ. Coaches over 16 seats and trucks, except project vehicles, are barred from Nghi Tàm and Yên Phụ nhỏ between Thăng Lợi Hotel and Thanh Niên; the page does not mention motorbikes in that ban. At the Thanh Niên–Yên Phụ junction the central reserve is closed and directions, right turns and U-turns follow the signs on site. The Department advises road users to choose a suitable route and follow officers at the works.
Parking at the destination
Chinhphu.vn (16 October 2026) reports Hanoi People’s Committee Decision 5794/QĐ-UBND, dated 15 October 2026 and effective from signing. It sets prices for parking bicycles, motorbikes and cars at temporary roadway or pavement spots funded from the state budget, and the page says this does not mean the same prices apply at every parking point in the city. For bicycles and motorbikes it lists:
| Parking period | Price (VND) |
|---|---|
| Daytime, per turn | 10,000 |
| Night, per turn | 15,000 |
| Day and night, per turn | 25,000 |
| Monthly, core streets with vehicle restrictions | 250,000 |
| Monthly, other streets | 200,000 |
The page gives no hours for day and night. For tickets, payment and collection, see Hanoi Motorbike Parking: Tickets, Payment and Collection Checklist.
Peak windows and following distance
| Page | Vehicles | Window |
|---|---|---|
| VTV, 23 Mar 2026 (Decision 01/2026, from 15 Jan 2026) | Common trucks under 2 t | No operation 6:00–9:00 and 16:00–19:30 |
| Tiền Phong, 5 Oct 2026 (Cổ Linh median opening, from 27 Sep) | Cars: no U-turn or left turn | 6:30–8:30 and 16:30–18:30 |
VTV places the truck rule in the inner-city area. The two windows differ and neither covers motorbikes, so a published peak window is no substitute for your own trial runs. On following distance, the Traffic Police Department page dated 29 August 2016 says that at 60 km/h or less in built-up areas a driver must keep a suitable gap that depends on traffic density, and a larger one in rain, fog or on slippery roads. It gives the 2-second method as the experience of some long-time drivers: at 40 km/h a vehicle covers 11 m each second, so 22 m in dry weather. The page cites Circular 91/2015/TT-BGTVT and does not say whether it still applies.
A wet morning: 14 October 2025
VnExpress reported that scattered rain of 10–20 mm in inner-city wards jammed numerous routes badly although nothing flooded. Hoàng Quốc Việt was jammed in both directions at 9:00, Võ Chí Công, toward Ring Road 2.5, Hoàng Quốc Việt and Bưởi, was jammed both ways, and Cau Giay street at Khúc Thừa Dụ was still dense at 10:00. The page adds that the Mai Dịch junction (Hồ Tùng Mậu–Phạm Văn Đồng–Xuân Thủy–Phạm Hùng) carries large flows on ordinary days and often jams on wet days. It offers no alternative route, and it is a year older than the other congestion reports. For the weather decision itself, see Hanoi Rainy-Season Riding: A Go-or-Postpone Decision Checklist.
A timing worksheet (general guidance, not from the pages)
| Check | What to record |
|---|---|
| Start time | Minutes taken at three different weekday start times |
| Direction | Outbound and return legs timed separately, since the two weekday reports above separate directions |
| Route | Two or three routes between your own addresses, with one-way sections noted from signs |
| Weather | Whether each trial was dry or wet |
| Parking | Time to find a spot, the walk from it and the price shown on site |
| Works | Any works notice on your own routes, such as the Nghi Tàm and Âu Cơ notice or the Ring Road 2.5 junctions above, re-checked on the day |
What the pages leave out
- Any travel time or recommended route from Tay Ho to Cau Giay: no page presents these streets as such a route.
- Any evening-peak report: the Tiền Phong, Báo Văn Hóa and VnExpress jam reports each cover a single morning, and VOV describes the Ring Road 2.5 jams only as occurring at times and at peak hours, without naming a morning or an evening.
- Whether the Nghi Tàm and Âu Cơ ban on coaches and trucks covers motorbikes, and when the works end.
- Peak windows for motorbikes, which parking spots near Cau Giay or Tay Ho the decision covers, and prices at private car parks or buildings.
- Whether the Ring Road 2.5 signals now work.
- Conflicts: the two Dan Tri pages disagree on when the 582 m section opened (25 September versus early October), and the 10 October page says nearly 20 km opened in some segments yet gives the whole route as about 19.41 km, without reconciling the two.
- Any rental-bike rule, or what a shop allows on a given road.
