A Dawn Ride Around Hanoi: Lakeside Exercise, Early Markets and Timing the Return

About 8 minutes to read

An early morning motorbike ride in Hanoi around sunrise raises four planning questions: when the sun comes up, what the pages say about lakeside exercise and the early markets, which rules touch the small hours, and when to be back. This guide reads eight pages, all opened on 26 October 2026, and attributes each statement to its page, with the page’s date where it shows one. It is a planning aid, not a route: none of the pages gives a ride loop or says where to park at a lake or market, and nothing here has been checked on the ground.

Sunrise times for Hanoi through the year

The U.S. Naval Observatory table for Hanoi (E105 51, N21 02, seven hours east of Greenwich) lists sunrise for every day of 2026. This extract takes the 15th of each month.

15th ofSunrise15th ofSunrise
January06:36July05:24
February06:27August05:35
March06:05September05:44
April05:38October05:52
May05:19November06:07
June05:15December06:26

Across the year the table’s sunrise runs from 05:14 to 06:36. It is 06:00 or later from 2 November to 21 March. The page lists sunrise and sunset only, with no twilight or first-light time, and it is a calculated table, not a forecast from a Vietnamese weather office.

Lights and horn in the early hours

Law 36/2024/QH15 on road traffic order and safety, in the text read on vbpl.vn, takes effect from 1 January 2025 under Article 88(1), except Article 10(3), which starts on 1 January 2026. Article 20(1) tells drivers to switch on front lights from 18:00 to 06:00 the next day, or in fog, smoke, dust, rain or other bad weather that limits visibility. Article 21(1) allows the horn only to warn of a possibly unsafe situation or before overtaking. Article 21(2) also bars continuous horn use and bars the horn from 22:00 to 05:00 in populated areas and around medical facilities, except for priority vehicles. Article 2(9) defines a driver (người lái xe) as someone controlling a motor vehicle, and Article 34(1) lists motorcycles (xe mô tô) and mopeds (xe gắn máy) as motor vehicles. Read together, those provisions reach riders; the page does not say so in one sentence.

From 2 November to 21 March the table puts sunrise at or after the 06:00 end of the stated lights period, for example 06:26 on 15 December. The text does not address the minutes between, and this guide does not suggest switching lights off in them. Penalties were not read.

Lakeside exercise: what the pages place at the water

VnExpress Travel (13 January 2020) describes Hoan Kiem Lake as quiet once road traffic thins and says that at about 4:00 to 5:00 older people walk and exercise around it. The Hanoi City portal (15 June 2026) places Area 1 of the low-emission pilot inside the lake’s walking street. Neither page says where to park, which paths are open or whether a day was a weekday or a weekend, so those points are unverified. As general guidance, not a rule from the pages, a rider can read the signs on the lake roads on the day and ask ward staff. The site’s page Hoan Kiem Lake & Ngoc Son Temple – The Iconic Heart of Hanoi covers the lake and temple themselves.

Early markets: two pages, two wordings of the hours

PageQuảng Bá flower marketLong Biên farm-produce market
VnExpress Travel, 13 January 2020Meets at about 3:00 to 4:00 through the year; all day near TếtBusy with goods vehicles at about 0:00 to 3:00
VnExpress, 20 January 2023On ordinary days trades from 3:00 until noon; through the night at TếtNot covered

The first page gives a 3:00 to 4:00 window and the second a run from 3:00 to noon; the wordings differ, and neither page explains how the two fit. Both describe wholesale trade. The 2020 page calls a night visit and photos at the flower market an interesting experience for tourists, but neither page gives entry rules or parking arrangements for either market. The 2020 page adds that Long Biên is noisy and crowded and that paths are not clean after rain. Quang Ba Flower Market by Motorbike: Early-Hour Planning and Parking is the site’s page on the flower market at early hours.

Restrictions listed for the Hoan Kiem core

VnExpress (1 July 2026) sets out the first phase of the city’s low-emission pilot. It cites the agriculture and environment department for the phases and areas, and the plan the construction department announced on 30 June for the traffic measures (the Hanoi portal page read gives no time windows, so the hours below rest on this newspaper report, not on an official page):

  • Area 1 (inside the boundary roads of the walking street and night market, 12 streets): motorbikes, mopeds and cars are barred from 19:00 to 24:00 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, priority vehicles aside.
  • Area 2 (the roads around the Old Quarter and the lake): fossil-fuel cars (ô tô) with more than 16 seats, other than buses and school transport, are barred from 06:00 to 09:00 and from 16:00 to 19:30 daily. Elsewhere the same page words the phase 1 rule for passenger-transport cars over 16 seats (buses and school transport aside) as peak-hour operation only with the city police’s written approval.
  • Phase 1 runs from 1 July to 31 December 2026. Phase 2, from 1 January 2027, widens the pilot to Areas 1, 2 and 3 in the Hoàn Kiếm and Cửa Nam wards.

The Hanoi portal adds that the city encourages limiting the circulation of motorcycles made before 2008 and mopeds made before 2016 when not used for business. None of the pages read lists a motorbike time bar at dawn or mentions rented bikes. A pilot can change, so the street signs decide. Readers who want the scheme’s dates, areas and motorbike rules can turn to Hanoi’s Low-Emission Zone Scheme: Dates, Areas and Rules for Motorbikes.

Air quality and weather for a dawn start

VnExpress (19 November 2024), citing the natural resources and environment ministry’s monitoring (its own page was not read), says Hanoi’s air pollution starts about October and lasts to April, with two severe windows a day: 6:00 to 8:00 and 17:00 to 19:00. It gives no advice for riders or walkers. The national forecasting centre’s season bulletin for November 2026 to April 2027 forecasts a nationwide average temperature mostly 1.0 to 2.0 °C above the multi-year average in November and mostly 0.5 to 1.5 °C above in December and January (1.0 to 2.0 °C above in the Central Highlands and the South). It says cold air may be weaker than average but short cold snaps remain possible, forecasts northern rainfall in November 15 to 30 per cent above average, and says thunderstorms, whirlwinds, lightning, hail and strong gusts are possible nationwide. It asks for regular updates from the short-range 1 to 3 day bulletins to adjust plans; it names production, response and reservoir-operation plans. It gives no Hanoi dawn temperature or fog figure. The page names before 15:00 on 15 November 2026 as the issue time of its next bulletin, so a newer forecast may replace these lines.

Timing the return from the pages’ clocks

The pages give three morning clocks: sunrise from the table, the 06:00 to 09:00 peak the city uses for large fossil-fuel cars in Area 2, and the 6:00 to 8:00 pollution window. The two windows open at 06:00, and from 2 November to 21 March the table puts sunrise at 06:00 or later. Example arithmetic, not advice: sunrise is 05:15 on 15 June, so a rider back by 06:00 has at most 45 minutes of the ride after sunrise; on 15 November sunrise is 06:07, so the same ride ends before sunrise. No page says when motorbike commuter traffic builds; the 06:00 to 09:00 window is defined for large vehicles. A departure-time worksheet sits on this site as Choosing a Motorbike Departure Time in Hanoi: A Rush-Hour Worksheet.

What the pages leave out

  • Any route, stop, gate, parking spot, toilet or shade at a lake or market.
  • First light, twilight, Hanoi dawn temperature or fog; the weather page gives national and regional lines only.
  • When motorbike commuter traffic builds, and whether the 6:00 window suits riders.
  • Official market hours; the two news pages word them differently, and neither gives entry rules or parking arrangements.
  • Penalties for lights or horn, and any rule for the minutes between 06:00 and sunrise.
  • How the pilot treats a rented bike. The pages also word Area 2 differently: the Hanoi portal says the whole Old Quarter, VnExpress the roads around the Old Quarter and the lake (its other passage lists boundary streets leading inward to the Old Quarter).
  • Any rental-specific rule.

Hours, closures and restrictions change, so confirm on an official page or by calling before leaving.
