Electric Scooter Battery Care: What Makers and the Public Security Ministry Say About Charging, Heat and Range Loss

About 6 minutes to read

This article collects what VinFast, Yadea Vietnam, Dat Bike and a Ministry of Public Security page say about electric scooter battery care: charging habits, heat and range loss. None of the pages is written for a renter, so the last section lists what they leave out. Only the Public Security page (25 July 2023) and VinFast’s Evo200 page (22 October 2022) show a date in the saved text, and the other pages show none. The sources disagree in several places, and the sections below show where.

Heat and temperature ranges

The Public Security page, which carries recommendations of its Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department, says to charge in a dry, airy place at 0-35 °C (otherwise with insulation or cooling measures), away from flammable goods and heat sources. VinFast’s Flazz manual names 10-35 °C as the band where lithium-ion batteries perform at their peak and advises against charging when the battery is at 45 °C or more. It says vehicle performance is reduced when the battery is below 10 °C or above 45 °C, and that long parking above 40 °C or in direct sun can reduce battery performance. It adds that after heavy load the inside of the battery can reach 60 °C even when the air is cooler.

Dat Bike adds that low temperatures reduce a battery’s real capacity and that its battery stops charging above 65 °C. Yadea says not to leave a scooter in harsh sun or a very cold place for long periods, and Dat Bike advises parking in shade.

Charge level and full charges

The Flazz manual says keeping 20-80% is better for battery life and that a battery left below 20% after use needs recharging within 3 days. Dat Bike also gives 20-80%. Yadea advises recharging at 20-30% rather than waiting for 0% and limiting repeated plug-ins in a day, while the Flazz manual says not to hesitate to charge whenever possible, and Dat Bike gives both pieces of advice: one charge a day and not to hesitate to charge whenever possible. On full charges the pages differ:

SourceLevel to keepFull (100%) chargeLong-storage level
VinFast Flazz manual20-80%At least once a month50-80% at about 15-35 °C; not below 20%
Yadea, charging articleRecharge at 20-30%None stated50-70%, recharged every 1-2 months
Yadea, Vekoo articleRecharge at 20-30%Says 80-90% instead of 100% may protect the battery longerAbout 50%
Dat Bike20-80%At least once a week80-90% before its battery lock, or 50-60% in its FAQ

The Flazz manual adds that storing below 20% for a long time can leave the battery completely damaged and lead to a refused warranty claim, and that a charge and discharge cycle is needed every 3 months.

Overnight charging: the sources disagree

The Public Security page says to wait about 20 minutes after use, to switch off the ignition while charging, to charge for no more than 8 hours continuously and to stop charging before going out or to bed. It says never to charge overnight or while no adult is at home. Yadea’s charging article prefers night charging because temperature and supply are steady, and also says to avoid overnight charging without a charger that cuts off by itself. The Vekoo article headlines not leaving the battery charging overnight or too long, and adds that if overnight charging is needed a smart charger that stops when full should be used. Dat Bike says its battery cuts off charging automatically, so overnight charging does not overload it, but that charging for the recommended times is preferable. VinFast’s Evo200 page lists about 10 hours for 0-100% on its standard 400 W charger, which is longer than the 8-hour limit on continuous charging that the Public Security page gives. This is the article’s own comparison, and neither page mentions the other.

Range loss and wear

The Flazz manual says battery capacity falls gradually through natural wear, and that vehicle performance is reduced below 10 °C, above 45 °C or below 20% capacity to protect the battery. Dat Bike lists signs of capacity loss: a scooter that once covered 100 km per charge now covering 50-60 km, and a full charge taking 1-2 hours instead of 6-8. Yadea says eco mode or regenerative braking can add 5-15% to the range of each charge. VinFast’s Evo200 page claims more than 70% of capacity remains after 2,000 charge and discharge cycles. Dat Bike’s page claims its battery keeps about 80% of capacity after about 350,000 km, or about 25 years. These life figures are makers’ statements, and no page reports an independent test.

Water, damage and original parts

VinFast’s Evo200 page gives the motor IP67 water resistance, described as coping with 0.5 m of water for 30 minutes, and states no water rating for the battery. It says the scooter accepts only its genuine battery. The Vekoo article says to wipe a wet battery dry and let it dry fully before use. The Public Security page says not to charge when the charger or vehicle shows a fault, to replace a battery showing swelling or cracks, to use a charger that matches the manufacturer’s specification and not to alter the vehicle’s technical parameters. Dat Bike says a swollen, cracked or leaking battery means stopping use at once and taking the scooter to a warranty centre. The Public Security page, the Flazz manual and Dat Bike all link carrying more than the allowed load to a shorter battery life, and the Public Security page and the Flazz manual also link it to swelling.

What the pages leave out

No page is written for renters. None says who is responsible for a rented scooter’s battery, whether a renter may charge it, where, or with what charger. The Flazz, Vekoo and Dat Bike advice is for those models, and no page says it applies to other scooters. The Flazz manual was read as partial text only. The Evo200 page gives IP67 for the motor and no water rating for the battery. No page gives measured range loss by temperature or battery age: Dat Bike’s 100 km to 50-60 km is an example of serious loss, not a rate, and the capacity-retention figures (VinFast over 70% after 2,000 cycles; Dat Bike about 80% after about 350,000 km) are makers’ claims. The temperature windows (0-35, 10-35, 10-30 and 15-35 °C, which the pages give for charging or for best performance), the waiting times and the full-charge advice differ, as shown above, and Dat Bike’s page itself gives two storage levels. The Public Security page covers electric vehicles in general rather than one scooter type. The maker pages whose dates were not captured cannot be placed in time, so later revisions are not ruled out.
