Returning an Electric Scooter: Agree and Record the Battery Level Before You Set Off

About 4 minutes to read

A weekly electric rental feels simple until return day, when someone says the scooter should come back with “enough” battery and you realise nobody said what enough means. Three things are worth agreeing before you ride away: what battery level is expected when you return, who charges the scooter and where, and how to record the display so that there is a record to point to later. What Thuê xe máy Nguyễn Hà expects is a question for the shop.

Three questions to settle before you ride away

  1. What level is expected at return? The same as at pickup, a stated minimum, or whatever is left, with charging handled by the shop.
  2. Who charges the scooter, where, and who pays for the electricity? Charging at your accommodation, at the shop or at a public point are different arrangements with different costs.
  3. What should you do if the battery runs low away from the shop? Ask whom to call and whether the shop recommends a place to charge.

The shop’s reference price for an electric scooter is 600,000 to 800,000 VND a week and 1,500,000 to 1,800,000 VND a month. These are reference prices, so the scooter and the rate have to be confirmed when you book. Whether charging is included in them is another question to ask; do not assume it either way.

Three possible return rules and what to record

RuleWhat you do at returnWhat to record at pickup
Same level as at pickupCharge until the display shows what it showed when you leftA photograph of the display at pickup, with the odometer in the same frame
A stated minimum, such as “at least half”Make sure the display is at or above that level before you reach the shopThe exact wording of the minimum and how the display shows it, in bars or as a percentage
Return it as it is and the shop charges itHand the scooter back and settle any charge for electricityThe starting level and how any charge for electricity is worked out

How to record the display

Photograph the dashboard in daylight, with the scooter switched on and upright. Include the battery display, the odometer and, if the dashboard shows it, the estimated range, all in one frame. Keep the original file: it carries the date and time of the shot. Repeat the photograph at the moment you hand the scooter back. A battery display is an estimate, not a precise measurement, and it can move when the scooter is under load, so two photographs taken at different moments may differ slightly even when nothing has changed. If you and the shop read the display differently, compare the two photographs and agree what the rule means before anyone talks about money.

Ask the shop to write the starting level on the form or in a message as well. A level written down by both sides is harder to dispute than a level held in one person’s memory.

Plan the last ride

If the rule is “same level” or “a stated minimum”, the charge is part of the return. Look at the display before the last day’s ride, not on the way to the shop. Think about where you will charge, how long it may take and whether the shop will still be open when it finishes. The shop is open 09:00–21:00 daily, so a charge that finishes late in the evening may not leave time to return the scooter the same day. Ask the shop how long a full charge takes for the scooter you are given, rather than assuming a figure.

Charging safely, and what to avoid

  • Use the charger that came with the scooter, and ask which socket and place the shop recommends.
  • Do not charge near anything flammable, in a damp place or where the cable crosses a walkway.
  • If the battery or charger gets very hot, swells, smokes or smells of burning, unplug it if that is safe, move away and call the fire service on 114. For an error message, stop charging and call the shop.
  • Do not leave it charging unattended or while you sleep.
  • Do not open the battery cover or swap the charger for another type.
