Renting as a Couple in Hanoi: One Motorbike or Two?

About 8 minutes to read

Two of you are arriving in Hanoi for a few days and want to get around by motorbike. Do you rent one bike and ride two-up, or rent two? The answer changes depending on whether you look at cost, parking, how tired the rider gets, or how much freedom you both want. This guide walks through each factor so you can decide before you book, not at the shop counter.

Short answer: one bike costs less and keeps you together, and it is the safer choice when only one of you is a confident rider. Two bikes cost roughly double in rent, fuel and parking, but spread the riding, the luggage and the decisions. If both of you are licensed, experienced riders and want to do different things on some days, two bikes usually pay for themselves in comfort.

Rental cost: one bike against two

Reference prices at Thuê xe máy Nguyễn Hà for a semi-automatic Honda Wave are 150,000 VND a day and 700,000 VND a week; for a Honda Vision, 200,000 VND a day and 1,000,000 VND a week. Confirm the bike and price when you book. The arithmetic is simple:

Rental periodOne WaveTwo WavesOne VisionTwo Visions
Three days at the daily rate450,000 VND900,000 VND600,000 VND1,200,000 VND
One week at the weekly rate700,000 VND1,400,000 VND1,000,000 VND2,000,000 VND

A second bike adds exactly its own rental. Each bike also carries its own deposit, kept separate from the rental and returned under the agreed conditions, so two bikes means two deposits to prepare. The full list is on the Hanoi motorbike rental price list.

Costs beyond the rental

  • Fuel. Two bikes burn more fuel than one bike carrying two people, even though a loaded bike uses a little more.
  • Parking. Every stop is two tickets instead of one. At Hanoi’s regulated on-street points, a motorbike now costs 10,000 VND per daytime visit, so a day with four stops adds 40,000 VND for the second bike. Our day budget worksheet shows how quickly parking adds up.
  • Helmets and rain gear. You need two helmets either way, but two bikes means two sets of rain gear and two locks to manage.

Overnight space where you stay

Before booking two bikes, ask your accommodation whether it can take two motorbikes overnight. Some small guesthouses in alleys and hotels in the Old Quarter have room for only one or two bikes in total, and parking the second one at an outside lot is another fee and another thing to collect each morning.

Rider fatigue: one person riding all day

With one bike, one person rides almost all the time. Riding a full day in dense traffic is far more tiring than sitting behind, and the passenger can tire too on long legs. If you both ride well and the shop permits it, you can swap riders; plan rest stops either way. With two bikes, each rider rests when they need to.

When your experience levels differ

If one of you is a confident rider and the other is new to motorbikes, the safest start is one bike ridden by the experienced person, with the newer rider on the back watching the traffic. A new rider should practise somewhere quiet before riding in the city, and should not take a second bike into rush-hour traffic on day one. Our tips for first-time riders cover where to start.

Licensing applies to each rider: if you rent two bikes, both of you need a licence valid for the bike you ride. Check this before you book rather than at the shop.

Luggage and seating

Two people on one bike plus backpacks or a small suitcase quickly becomes cramped and harder to balance at low speed, when stopping or turning. Check the bike’s load limits and the passenger footrests before a two-up trip; see two people on one rental bike. If you travel light, one bike works; with suitcases, either split the load across two bikes or move the luggage by taxi.

Flexibility of your plans

One bike means you go everywhere together, at the same time and pace. That suits couples who like doing everything together, but it is awkward when one person wants an afternoon rest and the other wants to keep exploring. Two bikes give that freedom, at the cost of staying in touch by phone and agreeing where to meet.

Two-up riding: what the law requires

Vietnam’s Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety 2024 sets two rules that apply directly to a couple sharing one bike. Clause 1 of Article 33 says the rider of a motorbike or moped may carry only one person; carrying two is allowed only in listed cases, such as a child under 12 or a sick person being taken for emergency care. Clause 2 says both the rider and the passenger must wear a helmet that meets the national technical standard, with the strap fastened properly. For two adults, that means one bike, two people and two fastened helmets, never a third person on the seat.

Ask the shop for two helmets that fit, and check both straps before setting off. A helmet that sits loose, or a strap that will not click shut, is worth swapping at the counter rather than discovering on the road.

Choosing the bike when you ride two-up

If you go with one bike, the model matters more than it does for a solo rider. Check these at pickup, with both of you present:

  • Seat length. Sit on the bike together and check that the passenger is not pressed against the rider or perched on the rear rack.
  • Passenger footrests. Fold them out and make sure both latch firmly; the passenger’s feet should rest on them, not hang.
  • Low-speed balance. Have the rider walk the bike a few metres and turn it with the passenger seated. A heavier scooter can feel steadier when moving but is harder to hold at a standstill with two on board.
  • Brakes and tyres. Extra weight lengthens stopping distances, so test the brakes in the shop lane before you leave.

An automatic such as the Vision is easier for a rider who is not used to changing gears with a passenger behind; a semi-automatic Wave suits riders already comfortable with gears. If you are torn between two automatics, our Vision or Air Blade comparison sets out weight and seat height from Honda’s pages.

A middle option: mix one bike and two

You do not have to commit to one answer for the whole trip. A pattern that often works for couples with different experience levels:

  1. First day or two: one bike, ridden by the more experienced person, while the other watches how traffic moves through junctions and roundabouts.
  2. Middle of the trip: if the second person feels ready and holds a valid licence, add a second bike for city days when you want different plans.
  3. Day trips out of town: decide day by day; a long ride can be easier on two bikes with the luggage shared, or simpler on one if the passenger prefers not to ride.

Ask the shop beforehand whether a second bike can be added part-way through a rental and what it would need, so the plan is not blocked by availability.

Decide in three steps

  1. Price the difference for your actual dates, as in the table above, and add estimated fuel and parking for the second bike.
  2. Ask two honest questions: who will ride, and is that person happy carrying the other all day? If both of you ride well and want to ride, two bikes fit better.
  3. Picture the worst day of the trip, such as heavy rain or one of you feeling unwell. Would you rather be on one bike together or on two? The choice that still feels right on that day is usually the right one.

If you are also weighing ride-hailing for some days, count every trip you would book in a day and compare the total with that day’s rental, fuel and parking.

FAQ

Is it cheaper for a couple to rent one motorbike in Hanoi?

Yes on rent, fuel and parking: one bike costs roughly half of two. Whether the saving is worth it depends on who rides, your luggage and how flexible you want your days to be.

Can we swap riders on one rental bike?

Ask the shop. Each person who rides needs a licence valid for that bike, and some rental terms name the rider. Get the answer in writing before you swap.

Can we start with one bike and add a second later?

That is often a sensible plan if one of you needs time to get used to the traffic. Ask the shop about availability for the dates you want and what papers the second rider needs.

Can three of us ride one motorbike?

Not three adults. Clause 1 of Article 33 of the 2024 road traffic law allows a motorbike rider to carry only one person, with a few listed exceptions such as a child under 12 or a sick person being taken for emergency care. Three adults need two bikes.

Do two bikes mean two deposits?

Usually each bike has its own deposit. Ask how deposits are paid and returned before you book, so you have enough cash or transfer limit available.
