A Travel Companion Joins Later: Adding a Second Rental Motorbike Mid-Trip in Hanoi
About 7 minutes to read
Short answer: when a friend or partner reaches Hanoi a few days after you and needs their own motorbike, treat the second bike as its own small agreement. Before they arrive, ask the shop three things: when the second bike’s rental days start, whether it ends on the same day as your bike or separately, and whether the two bikes sit in one booking or two. Then work out a rough budget from the published daily prices, confirm the actual total with the shop, and write the new arrangement down separately from your original rental.
How Thuê xe máy Nguyễn Hà handles a second bike added mid-trip has not been published as a fixed rule, so this guide does not promise one. It helps you ask the right questions, estimate the cost honestly and avoid confusion when both bikes go back.
Three ways a second bike can be counted
| Arrangement | What to ask the shop | Effect on the budget |
|---|---|---|
| A separate rental with its own start and end dates | Do the second bike’s days start when it is collected, and when will it be returned? | You pay for the days the second bike is with you |
| Added to your current rental, returned on the same day as the first bike | Can both bikes share one rental period, ending on the first bike’s return date? | Fewer days for the second bike, and a single return day for both |
| First bike returned early, second bike kept longer | Can the first bike go back before the second, and how is each counted? | Fewer days on the first bike; the second is counted from collection to return |
All three are possible in principle. Which one applies is the shop’s decision, so ask which arrangement fits your situation rather than assuming.
A worked budget using the published daily prices
The shop’s published daily prices are 150,000 VND for a Honda Wave or a Honda Click / Yamaha Mio, and 200,000 VND for a Honda Vision, a Honda Air Blade or a 50cc scooter. Weekly prices are also published: 700,000 VND for the Wave, Click and Mio, and 1,000,000 VND for the Vision and Air Blade. The full table is on the Hanoi motorbike rental prices page.
Example for illustration only: you rent the first bike for seven days. Your companion collects a second bike on day four and returns it on the same day as yours. If the shop counts calendar days, the second bike is with you for four days, which is around 600,000 VND on a 150,000 VND bike or 800,000 VND on a 200,000 VND bike at the published daily rate. If the shop counts 24-hour periods from collection, the number of days could differ, which is exactly why you should ask how days are counted.
These figures are a planning guide, not a quote. The actual total depends on the bike, the number of days and the shop’s confirmation. Budget fuel and parking separately for each bike too: two bikes travelling together do not necessarily use the same amount of fuel, and each needs its own parking ticket.
One rental for two weeks, or a second bike for a few days?
If your companion will only be with you for part of the trip, a short second rental is usually simpler than switching both of you onto one bike. Riding two-up has its own limits on seating, load and comfort, which our guide on renting as a couple: one motorbike or two walks through. If the second bike will stay for a week or more, ask whether the weekly price applies, because the published weekly rate is lower than seven separate days on the same bike.
What to ask before your companion arrives
- When the days start: from the day of collection or another date, and whether the shop counts calendar days or 24-hour periods.
- One booking or two: will the second bike join your existing rental or be recorded separately with its own end date?
- Who needs to be there: does the second rider need to come to the shop in person, and what does the shop need from them? Ask rather than guess. The shop’s rental requirements page is a good starting point.
- Deposit: does the second bike have its own deposit, and how is it handled when the bike comes back?
- Collection time: the shop is open 09:00–21:00 daily. If your companion lands late, ask whether they can collect the same evening or the next morning.
- Bike type and availability: only the shop knows whether a particular model is free on that date.
A message you can send before they land
Sending the details in one message helps the shop answer quickly:
- your current rental dates and the bike’s model or plate number;
- the date and approximate time your companion arrives, and the type of bike they would like;
- whether the second bike should be a separate rental or added to yours;
- how the days will be counted and when the second bike will end;
- what documents and deposit are needed for the second bike;
- a request for the total price for the second bike.
Record the new agreement separately
Keep the second bike’s arrangement on its own line rather than squeezing it into your original booking. A confirmation message or note should include:
- the name of the renter and rider for the second bike;
- the bike type and plate number at collection;
- the collection date and time, and the planned return date and time;
- the daily price, number of days, total and what it includes;
- any deposit and how it will be returned;
- how extra hours will be handled if the bike comes back late.
Photograph the second bike at collection just as you did the first: all sides, the odometer, the fuel level and any existing marks. Keep each bike’s photos in a separate album so you pull up the right set at return. Our handover photo shot list covers what to capture.
Who is responsible for which bike
When two bikes travel together, responsibility can blur. Ask the shop at collection how it records the renter and rider of the second bike. Do not swap bikes between riders mid-trip without telling the shop, because the paperwork or messages will no longer match the bike actually being ridden. If a swap is needed, ask first and note it down.
Returning two bikes
If both bikes go back on the same day, agree a return time that suits both riders and leave enough margin for traffic and refuelling. If they go back on different days, confirm each return separately and make sure each deposit and each set of photos is matched to the right bike. If your plans change and you want to keep a bike longer, ask before the end date rather than on the day.

Frequently asked questions
Does the second bike have to end on the same day as mine?
Not necessarily. It may be possible to return it on the same day or on a different day; ask the shop which arrangement applies.
Is the second bike counted from when it is collected?
That is the most common expectation, but ask whether the shop counts calendar days or 24-hour periods, because the number of days can differ.
Will we get a cheaper rate for having two bikes?
Do not assume a multi-bike discount. Use the published daily and weekly prices to plan, and ask the shop for the actual total.
Does my companion need to come to the shop?
Ask in advance. The shop will tell you what it needs from the second rider and whether they must be present at collection.
Can we swap bikes between us during the trip?
Only after asking the shop and noting the change, so the records match the bike each person is riding.
Is there a separate deposit for the second bike?
Ask the shop. If there is one, write down how it will be returned when that bike comes back.
