A Six-Day Hanoi Stay: Should You Take a Weekly Rental or Pay Day by Day?

About 5 minutes to read

For a six-day stay, compare how long you would keep the bike under each booking. At the semi-automatic reference ranges below, a full week costs less than six separately charged rental days; for four or five rental days the ranges overlap, so the exact quote decides. Pay by the day and you pay only for the days you keep the bike. Take the week and the price per day drops, but only if you really use the days. The right answer depends on two numbers you can ask the shop to confirm, the day rate and the week rate, and one number you have to decide yourself: how many rental days you would actually keep the bike, including days it stays parked.

Put both quotes on one scale

For a semi-automatic bike, the reference prices at Thuê xe máy Nguyễn Hà run from 150,000 to 200,000 VND a day and from 700,000 to 800,000 VND a week. They are reference prices, so the rate for your bike has to be confirmed when you book. A weekly price divided by seven looks like 100,000 to 114,000 VND a day, but that figure assumes you use all seven days. If you keep the bike for six days and still pay for the whole week, the real figure is 700,000 ÷ 6 ≈ 117,000 VND to 800,000 ÷ 6 ≈ 133,000 VND for each day of use. That is below the daily range at both ends, which is why six riding days point to the weekly rate at these reference prices.

Compare the days you would actually rent

The weekly price stays fixed while you hold the bike. For the day-by-day column below, assume you collect and return it for only the stated number of rental days, and the shop agrees to those bookings. A day you keep the bike still counts even if you do not ride it; skipping a ride does not pause the rental. Confirm the pickup and return times before using the table.

Separately booked rental daysDay by day (150,000 to 200,000 VND)One week (700,000 to 800,000 VND)What it means
4600,000 to 800,000 VND700,000 to 800,000 VNDDay by day is cheaper or equal in three of the four rate combinations
5750,000 to 1,000,000 VND700,000 to 800,000 VNDThe week is cheaper in three of the four combinations
6900,000 to 1,200,000 VND700,000 to 800,000 VNDThe week is cheaper in all four, by 100,000 to 500,000 VND

The four combinations are the low and high ends of each range. At five days, paying by the day comes out ahead only when the lowest day rate meets the highest week rate, and then by just 50,000 VND. Replace the ranges with the exact figures the shop gives you for your bike.

The table uses a semi-automatic bike. For an automatic scooter the weekly range is wider, 600,000 to 1,000,000 VND against the same 150,000 to 200,000 VND a day, so six days day by day beats the week in one of the four combinations: 6 × 150,000 VND is 100,000 VND less than the highest weekly rate of 1,000,000 VND.

Count your riding days honestly

Write out your six days and mark each one as ride or no ride. Arrival and departure days often count for less than you expect: a late flight in or an early departure can turn a full day into an hour. A day spent on foot in the Old Quarter, a day trip by train or bus, or a day of heavy rain are days you would pay for under the weekly rate without using the bike.

Two made-up travellers show how the choice moves. Maya plans to ride on all six days, so her cost is the weekly rate at 700,000 to 800,000 VND against 900,000 to 1,200,000 VND day by day, and the week is clearly cheaper. Tom plans a separate four-day booking, collecting on day one and returning at the agreed end of day four before spending the last two days on foot. If the shop agrees to charge exactly four rental days, the day-by-day total is 600,000 to 800,000 VND against the weekly range. Keeping the bike through day six would need a six-day quote even if he rode on only four days.

What to ask before you choose

  • Which bike do both rates refer to? A scooter and a semi-automatic bike can have different prices.
  • Does the weekly rate apply if I return the bike after six days, or does it need a full seven?
  • Is the day rate the same for each day, or does it change with the number of days?
  • How does the shop count a rental day? The answer changes how much of your first and last day you use.
  • If I skip a day in the middle, can I return the bike and take one again, or do I pay for the day I hold it?
  • If I keep the bike a few hours past the end of the booking, what do I pay? The shop’s confirmed extension fee is 20,000 VND per hour and more than 6 hours counts as one rental day, so ask how that applies to your dates.

If the totals are close, choose by how sure your plans are

Treat the weekly rate as a commitment: unless the shop tells you otherwise, you pay it whether or not the weather and your energy cooperate. Day by day keeps your options open if the shop lets you stop whenever you like, which matters if you are unsure about riding in the rain or may cut the stay short. If your plans are firm and you will ride most days, take the week; if they are loose, the small saving of the week may not be worth the commitment.

Beyond the rental price

Rent is only part of what a bike costs you. Fuel, parking and the days the bike sits unused all belong in the comparison; the Hanoi motorbike day budget worksheet covers fuel, parking and food, and the motorbike rental prices in Hanoi page lists the shop’s reference prices.
