Long-Term Motorbike Rental in Vietnam: Visa Dates, Temporary Residence and an Alignment Checklist
About 6 minutes to read
A rental that runs for several months and a visa that may not last as long are two separate sets of dates, and the address a foreigner sleeps at is a third. This guide sets out what official pages say about visa validity, extensions and temporary residence declarations, then turns that into a checklist.
One limit applies throughout. None of the official pages reviewed says how a rental contract interacts with a visa or residence status, or what any rental shop requires. The idea of keeping visa, address and contract aligned is practical planning, not a legal rule. The e-visa portal, its FAQ, the US Embassy page and the UK entry-requirements page show no date and were read on 24 October 2026; the other pages carry the dates given below.
Start with the visa: how long it can last
Vietnam’s national e-visa system, run by the Immigration Department of the Ministry of Public Security, states in its FAQ that an e-visa cannot exceed 90 days and that its validity must be at least 30 days shorter than the passport’s validity. The FAQ also says e-visas are for foreigners applying to enter Vietnam, not for foreigners already residing there. The UK government’s travel advice (the page shows no date) adds that an e-visa obtained while in Vietnam only starts once the holder has left the country and re-entered.
Staying longer: extend, renew or replace
Government pages differ in emphasis on what is possible for a longer stay.
- Canada’s travel advice, last updated 19 October 2026, says visits longer than 90 days require a visa from the nearest Vietnamese embassy before departure.
- Australia’s Smartraveller page, updated 24 September 2026, says the status of an entry visa cannot be changed to any other visa type inside Vietnam.
- The e-visa portal says e-visa holders already in Vietnam may be eligible to apply for a new visa if an authority, organisation or individual in Vietnam invites or guarantees them.
These statements come from different governments and are not the same rule. The pages reviewed do not describe specific long-stay visa categories and do not explain which route suits which traveller. That question belongs with the Immigration Department or the nearest Vietnamese embassy.
For extensions, Australia says Vietnam does not issue automatic extensions, that an extension is only possible before the visa expires, and that the passport needs at least 6 months of validity left when applying; that figure comes from the Australian page alone and may not apply identically to every passport. The US Embassy page says foreigners who want to extend or renew a visa, or to resolve an overstay, must appear in person at the competent Immigration Office where they live. The UK government’s living-in-Vietnam guide, last updated 23 September 2025, adds that immigration authorities do not answer enquiries by email or phone. The US Embassy says it cannot sponsor US citizens in visa matters, and the British Embassy says it will not assist with visa extensions.
The pages reviewed give no document list, fee or processing time for an extension, and they give different addresses for Hanoi immigration offices, so none is stated here; confirm them with the Immigration Department directly.
Visa agents and scams
The UK government’s living-in-Vietnam guide says it is aware that some foreigners use visa companies to apply to extend their stay without leaving the country, and that it cannot control those services or the rates charged. Australia’s page warns that travellers have been scammed by private online visa services and travel agents.
What an overstay can mean
The UK guide says visitor visas are issued for a limited duration and that visitors must leave on or before the expiry date. The UK entry-requirements page (the page shows no date) says that after an overstay the authorities can prevent a person from leaving until a fine is paid, and that the person could be deported and barred from visiting Vietnam in future. Canada’s page adds that a traveller without a valid visa may not be allowed to check into or book accommodation, which links visa status to the address side of the paperwork.
Temporary residence: match the declaration to where you sleep
The e-visa portal says foreigners who change their temporary residence, or stay at an address different from the one on their temporary residence card, must update their temporary residence under the regulations. It also says the declaration is made through the person directly managing and operating the accommodation establishment, to the local police at the commune, ward or town police station.
The US Embassy page gives its understanding that all visitors to Vietnam, including Vietnamese citizens, must register with the police station where they stay overnight. Australia’s page says foreigners must register their place of residence with the local police within 24 hours of arrival; the 24-hour figure comes from the Australian page, not the Vietnamese portal. Australia also says a foreign resident must carry both a passport and a residence document, such as a Temporary Residence Card, for domestic flights and accommodation. None of the pages reviewed explains how to obtain a card, who is eligible, how long one lasts or what it costs.
Practically, the declaration has to follow the traveller between addresses. If any rental paperwork records an address, it makes sense for it to match the declaration.
An alignment checklist
The table is practical planning built from the sources above, not a statement of law.
| Item | Question to ask | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Visa end date | Does it fall after the planned end of the rental? | E-visa cap of 90 days (e-visa FAQ); extensions only before expiry (Australia) |
| Passport validity | Is it long enough for the visa margin, and for an extension if one is needed? | 30-day margin for e-visa (e-visa FAQ); 6 months for an extension (Australia) |
| Extension timing | Can an in-person application be made before the visa expires? | US Embassy page; Australia |
| Address | Does the temporary residence declaration match where you actually sleep? | E-visa portal; US Embassy page; Australia |
| Rental end date | If the visa changes, can the rental dates change with it? | Practical planning; ask the shop |
The last row is a question for the rental shop, not a fact about what any shop allows. For the contract side, see How to Read a Motorbike Rental Contract Before Paying a Deposit; for the rental-period side of a longer stay, see Motorbike Hire Hanoi: How to Extend Your Rental Period. For paperwork beyond the visa, see Foreign Licence Exchange in Hanoi: Prepare Documents Before a Long-Term Motorbike Rental, and for questions to put to an insurer, see Travel Insurance and Rental Motorbikes in Vietnam: Questions for Your Insurer.
Visa and residence rules change, so confirm each point with the Immigration Department or the nearest Vietnamese embassy before relying on it.
