Returning a Rental Motorbike Before a Night Train From Hanoi Station: Timing and Luggage Plan
About 7 minutes to read
A night train leaves no room to improvise: the bike has to be back, the bags have to be with you and you have to be at the station on time. This article covers the published framework around that plan: Vietnam Railways luggage limits, press advice on arriving early, the state of the metro to Hanoi Station and the road rule on bulky loads. The figures personal to each trip, such as the departure time on the ticket and the length of the return at the shop, are not in these sources, so the shop-side questions come at the end.
Start from the departure time on your ticket
Published timetables for trains leaving Hanoi do not agree with each other. An English-language timetable page on vietnamrailwaycorp.com (marked “Update in August 2025”; the page does not say who runs it) and a 2025 timetable guide from the provincial newspaper Bao Nghe An list different departure times for the same train numbers. This article therefore quotes no departure time. Take the time from your ticket and confirm it on the official Vietnam Railways site or app, because timetables change.
Then work backwards from that time and write down each step:
- Departure time on the ticket, confirmed with Vietnam Railways.
- Time at the station before departure. State radio (VOV, 22 February 2026) advised being at big stations at least 45 to 60 minutes early, because waiting halls and ticket gates are often congested. The piece was written after Tet, so it may reflect peak-season crowding, and it is advice rather than a rule. The sources reviewed give no official check-in cut-off for Hanoi Station.
- The last transfer from the return point to the station. The same article says to allow for traffic at the station approaches. No source reviewed gives a journey time or fare for that transfer.
- The handover at the shop. Ask how long the return takes and by what time it must be finished. Whichever shop is used, a return time outside its opening hours should be raised before booking, not on the day.
The same VOV article says to have the e-ticket ready as a screenshot or printout, together with ID or a passport, so it can be shown quickly at the control gate.
Reaching Hanoi Station: the metro is not an option yet
Hanoi Metro Line 3 is planned to end at Hanoi Station, but the section that reaches it has not opened. A press release from the European Investment Bank dated 20 October 2026 (the bank is a financier of the line, not its operator) says the elevated section between Nhon and Cau Giay has been running since August 2024. It adds that work continues on the four-station underground section towards the station, which the release calls both Hanoi Station and Hanoi Central Station, and that this section is scheduled to open in 2027 under the government’s current implementation plan. Until it opens, the metro is not a way to reach the station.
The sources reviewed do not cover city buses, taxis or ride-hailing between a city return point and the station, so no fare or journey time is given for that transfer. The one bus link on the Noi Bai Airport page is route 86 between the airport and Ha Noi Railway Station, listed at 50,000 VND per trip with departures from 7h00 to 22h15 as read on 24 October 2026. That matters for the airport link only, not for a transfer within the city.
Luggage rules on Vietnamese trains
The figures below come from a Vietnam Railways notice reported by VOV on 20 February 2024. That report is more than 12 months old, so check for later changes before travelling.
| Item | Limit reported |
|---|---|
| Free hand luggage, per passenger | Up to 20 kg, 0.8 m long, 0.5 m wide, 0.4 m high and 0.16 cubic metres; anything over costs extra |
| Hand luggage that obstructs the aisle or endangers the carriage | Must go in the luggage van, if there is space |
| Checked baggage, each piece | Up to 2.5 m long, 0.5 m wide, 0.5 cubic metres and 75 kg |
| Changes to checked baggage, such as not sending some or all of it or changing the destination station or recipient | Must be arranged 4 hours before the train leaves, at stations that handle checked baggage |
Vietnam Railways’ own regulation page (dated 2015) agrees on 20 kg of free hand luggage for a full-fare ticket. It also says hand luggage must be packed and kept in the designated place on the train, and it lists bulky items that obstruct movement among the goods not allowed as hand luggage.
None of the sources reviewed says whether Hanoi Station offers left-luggage storage, or at what hours and fees. The 4-hour rule applies only at stations that handle checked baggage, and the sources do not say whether Hanoi Station is one of them, so ask Vietnam Railways before building the plan around either.
The suitcase between the shop and the station
If the plan has the suitcase travelling on the rental scooter to the return point, the road rules apply to that ride. Under Law 36/2024/QH15, in force since 1 January 2025 and summarised by the government’s policy portal Chinhphu.vn on 5 January 2025, riders of two-wheeled motorbikes may not carry bulky objects or load goods beyond the permitted limits (Article 33(3) of the consolidated text, 55/VBHN-VPQH, 2026, in Vietnamese). The explainer does not define “bulky” and does not mention suitcases, so it does not say whether a given case counts. Penalty rules were not reviewed. Rules change, so confirm the current position with the official source, and ask the shop what it advises for getting bags to the return point.
Questions to ask the shop before an evening return
- What is the latest return time that still suits an evening departure, how long does the return take, and what happens if it runs late?
- Can bags be left at the shop during the return, and on what terms?
- Can the bike be returned somewhere other than where it was collected? The site’s One-Way Motorbike Rental from Hanoi: Questions to Ask Before Booking lists questions for that situation.
- What written record of the return will be given? The site’s Returning a Rental Motorbike in Hanoi: A Receipt and Handover Checklist is a checklist for that step.
A late flight raises a similar timing problem; see Hanoi Motorbike Rental for a Late Flight: Plan Pickup and Return.
