Price Ranges on a Rental Listing: Pin Down Which Bike and Rate You Are Getting

About 4 minutes to read
A listing that says “150,000 to 200,000 VND a day” does not name a price. It names a range, and what you pay depends on facts the listing leaves out, starting with which bike the rate belongs to. The shop’s own reference prices show how much that can matter. Some ranges are narrow enough to plan around, while others leave a gap of several hundred thousand dong. The gaps are measured below, followed by how to pin down the bike and the rate before you book.
How wide each reference range is
These are the reference ranges at Thuê xe máy Nguyễn Hà. They are reference prices only, so the bike and the rate have to be confirmed when you book. The last two columns are simple arithmetic: the gap between the ends, and how far the top of the range sits above the bottom.
| Bike and period | Reference range | Gap | Top above bottom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semi-automatic, one day | 150,000 to 200,000 VND | 50,000 VND | 33% |
| Semi-automatic, one week | 700,000 to 800,000 VND | 100,000 VND | 14% |
| Semi-automatic, one month | 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 VND | 200,000 VND | 20% |
| Automatic, one day | 150,000 to 200,000 VND | 50,000 VND | 33% |
| Automatic, one week | 600,000 to 1,000,000 VND | 400,000 VND | 67% |
| Automatic, one month | 1,200,000 to 2,000,000 VND | 800,000 VND | 67% |
| Electric, one week | 600,000 to 800,000 VND | 200,000 VND | 33% |
| Electric, one month | 1,500,000 to 1,800,000 VND | 300,000 VND | 20% |
There is no reference price for an electric bike by the day, so if you want a daily electric rate, ask whether one is offered and what it is. The pattern in the table is the point: a semi-automatic bike by the week is a fairly tight range, while an automatic bike by the week or by the month spans two thirds of its own bottom price.
What naming the bike does to the range
A few models have a reference price of their own instead of a range:
| Bike | One day | One week | One month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honda Vision | 200,000 VND | 1,000,000 VND | 2,000,000 VND |
| Honda Air Blade | 200,000 VND | 900,000 VND | 1,500,000 VND |
| 50cc bike | 200,000 VND | 1,000,000 VND | 2,000,000 VND |
Set against the automatic ranges above, the gap in a listing becomes visible. A weekly price of “600,000 to 1,000,000 VND” covers both the Air Blade and the Vision. Plan with the middle of that range, 800,000 VND, and you are short by 100,000 VND with the Air Blade and by 200,000 VND with the Vision, every week. Over a month the Vision leaves you 400,000 VND short of the middle of 1,200,000 to 2,000,000 VND, which is 1,600,000 VND, while the Air Blade comes in 100,000 VND under it: a range hides the error in both directions.
A range can mean two different things
A range on a listing can reflect different bikes in the same category, the same bike at different times, or both. The reference prices do not say which, and guessing wrong costs money in either direction. If you assume the bike sets the price, you may choose a cheaper model and still be quoted the top figure. If you assume the date sets it, you may wait for a lower quote that never arrives. Ask which factor moves the price, and ask for the figure that applies to your bike and your dates.
Three things to pin down before you pay
- The bike. Ask for the model, not the category, and whether the rate changes with the bike’s age or condition. “Automatic” is a category; “Honda Air Blade” is a bike with a price.
- The period. Check that the figure matches the length of your stay, whether a day, a week or a month. A daily figure multiplied by thirty is not a monthly price.
- What the figure covers. The reference prices do not say what comes with a bike, so ask what the quoted rate includes instead of assuming helmets, rain gear or anything else.
Budget with the top of the range until you have a name
Until the shop has named the bike and the rate, a budget built on the top of the range is the safer starting point, but only the confirmed price is final. For a week on an automatic bike, that means 1,000,000 VND rather than 800,000 VND; if the confirmed price turns out lower, the difference is spare room, not a surprise. Replace the range with the confirmed figure the moment you have it, and keep the confirmation where you can find it again.
A message that closes the gap
One short question settles most of this: “Which bike does your 600,000 to 1,000,000 VND weekly price refer to, and what is the weekly price for the Honda Air Blade?” Adapt the bike and the figure to the listing you are reading. The shop’s motorbike rental prices page lists its reference prices, and the copy-and-send booking message shows how to ask for dates, bike and rate in one note.
When two listings each give a range, compare the quotes line by line only after both have named a bike. For more on reading price lists, browse the Rental Prices & Budgets category.
