Add-Ons on a Rental Bike: Which Extras to Ask About Before You Agree the Rate

About 4 minutes to read

Suppose two people book a bike for a week and the quote lists one rate and nothing else. On the first morning it turns out the bike has one helmet for the two of them, the phone has no mount, and rain is forecast for Thursday. Each of those is an extra, and each one is either part of the rate, a separate charge or something the shop does not offer. Which one it is should be written down before you agree the rate, not discovered at the counter.

The five extras worth asking about

ExtraWhy it mattersWhat to get in writing
A second helmetA passenger needs a helmet that fits, not a spare that nearly doesWhether one is available, whether it is included, and how fit is checked
A phone holderA firmly mounted phone beats one held in the hand, but a loose mount or a bright screen distracts: set the route while parked and never handle the phone while ridingWhether one exists, what it fits and what it costs
Rain gearA bike without cover turns a shower into a decision about whether to ride at allWhether a poncho or rain suit is provided and what happens if it is damaged
A top box or luggage rackLuggage on the footboard can foul your feet and the controls, and a heavy bag on your back affects balance; ask whether there is a load limitWhether it can be fitted, who fits it and whether it is charged by the day
A lockParking overnight needs more than the steering lockWhether a lock comes with the bike, which one, and who is responsible if it is lost

A reference price shows the scale of the rate; it does not say whether any of these extras is included, so do not assume it either way. The questions are the same whatever the shop: is it available, is it included, how much is it, and what happens if it is lost or broken? If you would rather bring some extras yourself, Motorbike Rental Hanoi: Recommended Motorcycle Accessories is a starting list, and for two riders Two People on One Hanoi Rental Bike: Load Limits and Pre-Ride Decisions covers the load question.

One message that covers all five

Put the whole list into a single message rather than five, so the answer comes back as one list you can paste into your notes. For example: “For a week from [date] for two people, which of these are included in the rate, which cost extra and which are not available: second helmet, phone holder, rain poncho, top box, lock? Please list the price of each extra and the total.” If you are unsure where to send it, call the shop first. A Motorbike Rental Booking Message for Hanoi: Copy-and-Send Template has a fuller wording for dates, bike and rate together.

Where an extra is also a safety item

A helmet is the one extra that should never be a compromise: if no helmet that fits the passenger is available, do not carry a passenger. A passenger’s helmet should sit level, stay put when the strap is fastened and not leave a gap at the front, and Helmet Fit at Motorbike Pickup: A Strap and Size Checklist shows the checks to run before you leave the shop. A phone holder belongs in the same group: a mount only helps if it holds the phone steady, and the route should be set before you move, which is what Phone Mounts on Rental Scooters: Compatibility and Distraction Checks goes through. For rain gear, Rain Suit or Poncho for Hanoi Riding: Check Moving-Part Clearance explains why loose material near the wheels and controls matters.

Adding the extras up

An extra that costs a little each day adds up over a week. When a quote lists a daily charge, multiply it by the number of days and add it to the rental before you compare with another offer. Suppose a phone holder is quoted at a daily amount and you keep the bike for seven days: the cost is seven times that amount, not one. If an extra is listed as a one-off charge instead, the quote should say so. How to Compare Two Hanoi Motorbike Rental Quotes Line by Line shows how to give each extra its own row so that two offers can be compared fairly.

Before you agree the rate

  1. List the extras you actually need for your trip, and cross out the ones you could do without.
  2. Ask for each remaining one to be listed as included, charged or unavailable.
  3. Ask what is expected if an extra is lost, damaged or returned late, and write down the answer.
  4. Check each extra at pickup, in daylight, before you sign anything: does the helmet fit, does the mount hold, does the lock close?
  5. Keep the written list with the booking message and the receipt.

The shop is open 09:00–21:00 daily at Ngõ 5 Nguyễn Văn Cừ, Bồ Đề, Long Biên, Hà Nội (near Gia Lâm bus station), and you can call 0334 699 969 to ask what is available. For the shop’s reference prices for the bikes themselves, see the motorbike rental prices page.
