National Holidays Other Than Tet: Plan a Hanoi Rental Around the Long Weekends

About 7 minutes to read
Vietnam public holidays other than Tet can stretch a weekend into a break of three, four or five days, and which days people are off can differ by employer, so a Hanoi motorbike rental that crosses one of these holidays is worth checking against the dates below. This page follows what ministry, Government and Hanoi notices say about the holidays in the Labour Code, the 2026 and 2027 schedules, Vietnam Culture Day and holiday traffic. None of the pages read covers rental shops, so nothing below says what any shop will do on those dates.
Holidays the Labour Code lists besides Tet
A Government e-newspaper article dated 2 May 2026 summarises Article 112 of the Labour Code and names these paid occasions.
| Occasion | Paid days listed |
|---|---|
| New Year’s Day (Tết Dương lịch) | 1 day |
| Victory Day (Ngày Chiến thắng), 30 April | 1 day |
| International Labour Day, 1 May | 1 day |
| National Day, 2 September | 2 days |
| Hung Kings holiday (Giỗ Tổ Hùng Vương), 10th day of the third lunar month | 1 day |
| Lunar New Year (Tet), set aside on this page | 5 days |
The same article says that when a weekly rest day coincides with one of these holidays, the rest day is taken on the next working day. The ministry’s Notice 9441/TB-BNV points to Articles 111 and 112 for that rule and adds that other holidays follow the Labour Code.
What the 2026 spring breaks looked like
The 2 May 2026 article worked through two spring holidays. The Hung Kings holiday fell on Sunday 26 April, so Monday 27 April became the compensating day, giving a three-day break from Saturday 25 April. Victory Day and Labour Day fell on a Thursday and a Friday; for people who do not work Saturdays that made four days, 30 April to 3 May. The article notes that the two breaks sat close together, with two working days between them, and reports the ministry’s position that these dates follow the Labour Code.
National Day 2026: five days for civil servants, a choice for employers
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued Notice 9441/TB-BNV on 16 October 2025; its web page is dated 17 October 2025.
| Group | What the notice sets |
|---|---|
| Civil servants and public employees | Two holiday days, Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 September 2026, with Monday 31 August swapped for work on Saturday 22 August |
| Other employers’ staff | Wednesday 2 September plus either Tuesday 1 or Thursday 3 September, chosen by the employer |
Dispatch 55/CĐ-TTg, signed on 19 August 2026 by the Standing Deputy Prime Minister, calls the holiday five days long. An arithmetic check, not a line on the pages: the weekend before the swapped Monday, that Monday and the two holiday days add up to five. The notice asks employers to announce their choice at least 30 days ahead and says the ministry encourages them to match the civil-service schedule, so the choice stays with each employer.
National Day 2027 and Hanoi’s notice
Ministry Notice 11483/TB-BNV of 9 October 2026, summarised by the Government e-newspaper on 22 October 2026, gives civil servants Thursday 2 and Friday 3 September 2027 as holiday days, and four days in a row to Sunday 5 September once the weekend is counted. Employers decide on Thursday 2 September plus either Wednesday 1 or Friday 3 September. Hanoi People’s Committee Notice 1732/TB-UBND of 15 October 2026, summarised on 19 October, repeats the 2 and 3 September holiday days and the same employer choice for the city.
A worked example from those dates: if an employer picks Friday 3 September, its holiday days run Thursday to Friday and, with the weekend, to Sunday 5 September. If it picks Wednesday 1 September, the holiday days are Wednesday and Thursday, and the notices do not make Friday a day off for that employer. The last day off can therefore differ between Hanoi employers.
Vietnam Culture Day on 24 November
Resolution 28/2026/QH16, as summarised by the Government e-newspaper on 13 May 2026, makes 24 November each year Vietnam Culture Day, with workers off and paid in full; it took effect on 1 July 2026. The State Audit Office’s site reported on 5 October 2026 that Government Office document 10065/VPCP-KGVX, conveying the Deputy Prime Minister’s approval, gives civil servants one day off on Tuesday 24 November 2026. Of the dates these pages give, it is the next after 26 October 2026, the day they were read.
Holiday traffic: what the pages say
Dispatch 55/CĐ-TTg, on a Ministry of Public Security page dated 20 August 2026, says the five-day National Day break, together with the start of the school year, was forecast to raise traffic and the risk of accidents and congestion. It asks police units to assign forces to regulate and divert traffic, above all on routes and areas forecast to be busier.
For Hanoi, the one dated example is a city police notice posted on 14 August 2025 for the 80th-anniversary events. It set road bans in central streets in listed windows, the last from 18:00 on 1 September to 15:00 on 2 September 2025, and a temporary ban on all vehicle types inside Ring Road 1 with listed exceptions such as buses. For the area from Ring Road 2 to Ring Road 3 it recommended limiting travel by commercial passenger cars under 16 seats, private cars and motorcycles (xe mô tô), and it said not to stop or park on streets under a ban. The notice does not mention rental bikes. No page read gives closures for 2026 or 2027 holidays. Holiday schedules and road restrictions are set by notices that can change, so confirm the current official notice before the trip.
Questions worth settling with the shop
This part is general planning guidance, not something the pages say. Because the pages describe no shop, these are questions to put to the shop before dates are fixed: whether its usual opening hours apply on the holiday days inside the booking, how pickup and return work on those days, and how a rental day is counted when a break covers several days. For that last point, see What Counts as One Rental Day in Hanoi? A Full 24 Hours, a Calendar Day or Opening Hours. For booking ahead, see Reserve Ahead or Walk In? Choosing How to Secure a Hanoi Rental Bike. The Lunar New Year break has its own page, Booking a Hanoi Rental Bike During Tet: What to Confirm Early, and for rentals built around weekends, see Weekend-Only Rides: Short Rentals Each Weekend or One Bike Held All Week?
What the pages leave out
- Rental shop hours on holidays. None of the pages read says whether any rental shop keeps its usual hours on a holiday or how pickup and return work then; the notices cover employment, not rentals.
- What each Hanoi business chose. The notices leave the National Day choice to the employer, so the pages cannot say which day any business closes.
- 2027 schedules for New Year’s Day, Victory Day, Labour Day and the Hung Kings holiday. The pages give none; the 2026 notice says only that other holidays follow the Labour Code.
- Hanoi road closures or crowd figures for 2026 or 2027. The only Hanoi closure notice read is from 2025, and the dispatch gives a forecast without Hanoi numbers.
- Labour Code changes. Culture Day comes from the resolution, not from the Article 112 list the e-newspaper summarised. The ministry page shows a headline about a draft law adding one paid holiday; its lead lines give a National Assembly session expected from 17 October to 20 November 2026 and name a bill amending the Labour Code among those to be considered. The page carries no draft text.
- How employers arrange 24 November. The resolution summary says workers are off with full pay and the civil-service document gives the day to civil servants; no page read says how an employer arranges the day or whether any business stays open.
