What Counts as One Rental Day in Hanoi? A Full 24 Hours, a Calendar Day or Opening Hours

About 4 minutes to read
Two quotes with the same price per day can produce different bills, because “a day” is not defined the same way everywhere. A rental day can run for 24 hours from the moment you take the bike, it can be every calendar date the bike is in your hands, or it can follow the shop’s opening hours. Which one applies matters as much as the rate, so ask before you pay. The sections below show how the two counts that can disagree change the total, what the shop has confirmed so far and which questions to put to it.
Three ways a shop can count a day
- A 24-hour period. The first day ends 24 hours after you take the bike. Collect at 14:00 and the day ends at 14:00 the next day.
- A calendar day. Every date on which you have the bike counts, even if you hold it for an hour on the last one.
- An opening-hours day. A day that ends at closing time, whatever hour you collected. For any return inside 09:00–21:00 it gives the same totals as the calendar column.
This guide does not claim that any shop uses one of these. They are the three readings worth ruling in or out with a single question, and the first two can disagree by a whole day.
Four trips under both counts
The reference price of one day for a semi-automatic or automatic bike is 150,000 to 200,000 VND; the figure for your bike has to be confirmed when you book. The table counts four trips in 24-hour periods (a started period counts as a whole one) and in calendar days, at both ends of that range.
| Trip | 24-hour periods | Calendar days |
|---|---|---|
| Monday 14:00 to Monday 20:00 (6 hours) | 1 day: 150,000 to 200,000 VND | 1 day: 150,000 to 200,000 VND |
| Monday 09:00 to Tuesday 09:00 (24 hours) | 1 day: 150,000 to 200,000 VND | 2 days: 300,000 to 400,000 VND |
| Saturday 10:00 to Sunday 21:00 (35 hours) | 2 days: 300,000 to 400,000 VND | 2 days: 300,000 to 400,000 VND |
| Monday 14:00 to Wednesday 10:00 (44 hours) | 2 days: 300,000 to 400,000 VND | 3 days: 450,000 to 600,000 VND |
Two of the four trips cost the same either way. The other two differ by exactly one day, which is 150,000 to 200,000 VND at these reference prices. In both trips a calendar count charges every date the bike touches, while a 24-hour count charges each block of 24 hours.
What the shop has confirmed, and what it has not
Thuê xe máy Nguyễn Hà is open 09:00–21:00 daily. It has confirmed an extension fee of 20,000 VND per hour, and more than 6 hours is charged as one rental day. That rule tells you how time beyond an agreed return is priced. It does not say how the original rental period is counted, and it does not say what happens to a bike taken or returned outside 09:00–21:00. Treat those as open until the shop answers.
Questions that settle it
Put these to the shop before you pay, and keep its answers:
- Is a rental day 24 hours from the moment I take the bike, a calendar date, or something else?
- If I keep the bike for 25 hours, how many days is that?
- If I return it the next morning, does the first day end at closing time or 24 hours after pickup?
- Does the answer change for a weekly or monthly rental?
The second question is the useful one: a single example with a number of hours leaves no room for two readings of the same sentence.
Plan the pickup and return around the count
Once you know which count applies, the clock times become part of the budget:
- With 24-hour periods, a pickup at 14:00 and a return at 11:00 on the third day costs one day more than a return at 13:00 on the second day, so aim to return before the hour you collected the bike, not after it.
- With calendar days, the pickup hour hardly matters, but the return date does: a bike that is still out after midnight belongs to the next date.
- If the shop counts by opening hours, a late pickup costs a whole day for a few hours of use, so ask whether an evening pickup can start the next morning’s day instead.
The point is the same for each: put the count next to the price in your own notes, so that a quote of “150,000 VND a day” is never compared with another one without it.
Where to go next
The shop’s rental FAQ page collects short answers to common rental questions. For the written comparison of two offers, How to Compare Two Hanoi Motorbike Rental Quotes Line by Line shows what to put in each row, and how to extend your rental period covers the case where you keep the bike longer than planned.
