Yamaha Grande Blue Core Hybrid: What Yamaha Pages Say About Fuel Use, Assist and Storage

About 6 minutes to read

Yamaha Grande hybrid questions come down to what Yamaha’s own pages claim, and this article keeps every claim with the page behind it. It reads Yamaha Vietnam’s Grande page, a launch article for the new Grande, an article on five years of the Blue Core engine, the Gear 125 Hybrid page, a technology page on the Stop & Start System, a Yamaha news article of 27 March 2020 and a Vietnam Register article of 3 February 2020. All of it is the maker’s wording or a declared figure; none of it is a road test, and none of it covers renting a Grande.

The Grande figures on Yamaha’s page

Source key: GP is Yamaha’s Grande page. The text saved for that page stops partway down its specification table, so dimensions, wet weight and warranty could not be read from it.

What the hybrid assist does, in Yamaha’s words

Yamaha’s launch article says the Grande was first launched in August 2014 and that the new model carries the second generation of Blue Core with the Hybrid assist; the anniversary article places that second generation four years after the first. The Grande page says the electric assist activates and adds pulling force to the engine up to 3 seconds after the scooter starts rolling, and that the effect is clearest on a climb or with an extra rider. Yamaha’s launch article for the new Grande says the assist gives a smoother ride, stronger acceleration and fuel saving, with a clear effect uphill or with an extra rider. How it works is explained outside the Grande page: Yamaha’s 27 March 2020 article says a smart generator takes electricity from the battery and helps the scooter accelerate, and the Gear 125 Hybrid page, which names the same Blue Core Hybrid 125cc engine, says nearly the same thing in close to the same words. The anniversary article calls the part a Smart Motor Generator, says it is built into the second-generation Blue Core and credits it with an engine weight 840 g lower. These are maker descriptions; no page gives a measured effect.

Stop & Start: two modes, three differently worded saving claims

The Grande page says Stop & Start stops the engine when the scooter is stopped and restarts it when the throttle is opened, in a normal mode and a heavy-traffic mode, and that it saves fuel under WMTC test conditions; no page read explains WMTC. Yamaha’s launch article says the system saves more than 7% of fuel with no condition given, while the 27 March 2020 article says up to 7% in Yamaha’s own test conditions. Yamaha’s technology page says a light pull on the throttle restarts the engine and that the traffic mode is triggered when speed stays at or below about 10 km/h for a long time; the text read stops before saying what that mode does. The same page says the system is fitted on some Yamaha models, so the Grande page, not the technology page, is what ties it to the Grande. No page says how a stop affects the 1.73 figure.

The fuel figure: 1.73 now, 1.69 in 2020

Yamaha’s page prints 1.73 l/100 km in its text and its specification row, with no test speed or cycle beside it. Yamaha’s article of 27 March 2020 gives 1.69 l/100 km, and the Vietnam Register’s article of 3 February 2020 lists 1.69 as well. None of the pages says whether the gap reflects a different version or a changed test. The Register article says makers test and declare consumption themselves, with the quality authority checking afterwards, so each figure is a declaration. The page’s lead line places the Grande among the “Top” fuel-saving automatic scooters in Vietnam without naming a ranking source in the text read. The anniversary article’s claim of more than 50% fuel saving, made in its passage on the 2014 launch of Blue Core and compared with the older engine generation, is not tied to the hybrid and gives no test basis. The launch article, the Gear page and the technology page carry no date in the text read.

Storage and the fuel cap

The Grande page prints 27 L for the compartment, says it holds two helmets and other items and has an LED light, and the launch article gives up to 27 L. The page places the fuel cap at the front, just above the footwell, opened by a button on the lock on the opposite side. The site has an article on what fits under a scooter seat, Under-Seat Scooter Storage: What Fits and What Must Stay Out, and one on the order of opening the cap and seat, Scooter Fuel Cap and Seat Release: Learn the Correct Sequence at Handover. The 4.0 L tank is the only fuel capacity the page prints, and no page read gives a distance per tank.

What the pages leave out

None of the seven sources covers renting a Grande: they give no rental terms, deposits or damage rules and nothing on what renting costs. None is a road test, so the smoother ride, stronger acceleration and fuel saving are Yamaha’s statements. The saved Grande text stops partway down the specification table, so its dimensions, wet weight and warranty could not be read, and no seat height was read. No page explains WMTC, says whether the Stop & Start saving is included in the 1.73 figure or states the number of riders or the load that figure assumes. The mechanism text comes from the 2020 article and the Gear page rather than the Grande page, and the assist window is worded differently: after rolling on the Grande page, after starting on the Gear page. Only one Grande version page was read; other Grande version pages were not read.
